Ethereum is nearing a significant milestone as the development of its highly anticipated Glamsterdam upgrade progresses toward completion. Toni Wahrstatter, a researcher at the Ethereum Foundation, revealed significant advancements in EIP 7928, which revolves around Block Level Access Lists. The preparations are shifting towards the first public testing phase.

Countdown to Launch

With ongoing trials on developer networks, the countdown to Glamsterdam is accelerating. The Sepolia fork is scheduled for October 6, 2026, with the mainnet transition expected in the fourth quarter of 2026. However, an official date is yet to be announced.

Wahrstatter anticipates that Glamsterdam could be one of the largest Ethereum forks to date, potentially due to its considerable scope. Although the preparation phase might seem extensive, he believes the ultimate outcome will be worth the wait.

The outlook for Glamsterdam and EIP 7928 is extremely positive, particularly as we approach the final stages, fueling expectations on the development side.

What Does the Upgrade Focus On?

The Glamsterdam upgrade aims to pave the way for the next generation of Ethereum’s scaling solutions. It focuses on three core objectives: accelerating transactions, expanding network capacity, and maintaining sustainability by curbing database bloat.

In this context, ePBS emerges as a key component, restructuring the block verification process to reduce trust assumptions. Meanwhile, the acronym BALs refers to access lists that serve as tools to support parallel processing capacity within Ethereum.

Vitalik Buterin, one of Ethereum’s co-founders, has shared his technical vision for the post-Hegota era. According to Buterin, post-Hegota plans will transition Ethereum from merely a blockchain into a more powerful hybrid architecture combining blockchain design with modern cryptography.
