The United States Federal Reserve voted in a split decision to hold interest rates steady, despite inflation reports showing prices climbing steadily and crucial midterm elections in less than a week.

Officials were divided at the meeting, with Cleveland Federal Reserve President Beth Hammack and Governor Lisa Cook voting for a 25-basis-point increase.

Fed Leaves Interest Rates Unchanged

The decision to hold interest rates steady comes a month after the central bank unanimously voted to raise interest rates for the first time in over three years. The Fed left rates unchanged despite sticky inflation figures and crucial midterm elections less than a week away. However, unlike last month’s meeting, the decision was not unanimous. Two members of the 12-member committee voted to raise interest rates. Cleveland Federal Reserve President Beth Hammack and Governor Lisa Cook voted for a 25-basis-point increase. This is the second time Hammack has dissented in favor of raising interest rates, the first being in July.

Speaking after the meeting, Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh stated that while employment numbers were positive, the central bank was concerned about rising prices.

“If you were listening next to me in that room the last couple of days, the overwhelming consensus, the overwhelming judgment, is that what we’ve done in this monetary medicine [is] starting to work some, but there are no firm conclusions. I’m encouraged by the progress we’ve made in a short period of time. But if the crux of your question is ‘you haven’t delivered yet, you haven’t achieved price stability,’ you’re right about that. But we’re working on it.”

Latest Inflation Figures

The numbers reveal that prices have risen since September’s interest rate hike. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose to 3.7%, up from 3.4% in August, driven by surging gas prices. The figure was higher than the expected 3.6%, while monthly prices rose 0.6%, up from 0.4% in August. Core inflation, which omits food and energy, rose 2.6%, compared to 2.4% in August. Wholesale prices jumped 6% in September, while the core Personal Consumption Expenditures Price Index, due on Thursday, is projected to jump over 3%.

Meeting Schedule Changes

Fed Chair Warsh also announced a change in the Federal Open Market Committee’s (FOMC) meeting schedule, starting next year. While there will still be eight yearly FOMC meetings, the focus of some of the meetings will change. One meeting will focus “exclusively on broad monetary policy strategy,” with no vote or policy statement following its conclusion. Further down the road, two FOMC meetings will focus exclusively on strategy, and six will be dedicated to setting monetary policy.

Geopolitical Situation Fueling Uncertainty As Officials Call For Rate Hike

Fed officials have reiterated that the ongoing geopolitical situation has fueled market uncertainty. However, they highlighted that domestic spending remains resilient, while productivity and capital investment are robust. Several Federal Reserve officials, such as Boston Fed President Susan Collins, Kansas City Fed President Jeff Schmid, and Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari, have called for more rate hikes, citing high inflation.

However, members of the interest rate-setting committee believe the Federal Reserve must monitor inflation levels before deciding the course of action. Hammack, who voted for a rate hike at the latest FOMC meeting, has previously spoken in favor of frequent, smaller rate adjustments.

The decision to hold interest rates steady comes less than a week before the midterms. President Trump has criticized the Federal Reserve’s interest rate decisions, which he believes are hurting the economy more than inflation. The FOMC will next meet on December 9. The CME FedWatch is currently putting the odds of another rate increase at 86%.
