Fiserv (NASDAQ: FISV) has taken its digital asset platform into live production, with Bank of North Dakota's dollar-backed Roughrider Coin serving as its first real-world use case. The announcement, made on October 1, 2026, marks a shift from concept to commercial deployment for stablecoin-powered banking.

How Roughrider Coin Works

The stablecoin's operation is divided across four parties. Bank of North Dakota sponsors the coin, VersaBank issues it, Fireblocks provides the digital asset infrastructure and tokenization services, and Solana processes the underlying transactions. VersaBank, operating through its U.S. subsidiary VersaBank USA, N.A., handles minting and burning of tokens, as well as custody and reserve asset management.

Roughrider Coin runs on Solana's Token-2022 standard, and the platform operates on a white-label infrastructure model. Participating institutions access the coin through Fiserv's Commercial Center, the commercial banking software they already use, meaning no separate wallets or unfamiliar interfaces are required.

Who Can Access It, and What Comes Next

More than 90 banks and credit unions across North Dakota can now access Roughrider Coin through Commercial Center and use it for interbank money transfers. North Dakota is the only U.S. state to operate its own bank, giving the Bank of North Dakota a central coordinating role in the state's financial network. The coin is designed exclusively for institutional use and is not available to the public or individual investors.

Fiserv has signaled broader ambitions for the platform beyond interbank settlement. Plans include stablecoin card issuance, cross-border payments, programmable commerce, automated corporate treasury management, tokenized deposits, and global currency account services. The platform is available to approximately 10,000 financial institution clients at no additional cost.

VersaBank president David Taylor said the partnership with Fiserv gives the industry "a trusted foundation to bring stablecoins into established banking and payment systems." Fiserv's head of embedded finance and digital assets, Sunil Sachdev, described the launch as moving beyond the proof-of-concept stage to commercialize stablecoin-based banking in a live environment.
