Former Ripple executive Matt Hamilton has criticized a proposal to dramatically expand the XRP Ledger transaction Memo field for storing larger files. The proposal would increase the current Memo limit from 1 KB to approximately 1.3 MB, representing an expansion of about 1,200 times. Supporters believe the change could broaden how developers and users interact with XRPL beyond traditional financial transactions.

According to XRPL Foundation contributor Vet, the expanded capacity could allow users to embed different types of files directly into transactions. These could include images, PDF documents, music tracks, short videos, source code, and compressed archives. Supporters have argued that network participants should have greater freedom over how they use available ledger space. Under that approach, users willing to pay the required transaction costs could store larger amounts of information.

Moreover, the proposal could support applications that combine financial transactions with documents or other digital content. However, Hamilton believes those benefits could come with significant infrastructure costs. Hamilton, who previously served as Ripple’s director of developer relations, described the proposed expansion as “a really bad idea.” His criticism centers on how XRPL nodes maintain and process ledger information.

Hamilton Raises Concerns Over XRPL Storage Growth

XRPL operates primarily as a distributed payment ledger rather than a decentralized file-storage network. Consequently, introducing substantially larger transactions could increase storage requirements across network infrastructure. Validators and other nodes must maintain ledger information to participate effectively in the network. Allowing users to upload larger files could therefore accelerate database growth as transaction volumes increase.

Hamilton argues that heavier storage requirements could eventually increase the hardware costs associated with operating independent nodes. Additionally, smaller operators could face greater difficulty maintaining the infrastructure required for network participation. That possibility has raised concerns about decentralization because higher operating costs could discourage some independent participants. Hamilton instead favors separating XRPL’s payment functions from applications requiring substantial data storage.

He pointed to specialized decentralized storage systems such as Filecoin as a more appropriate option for large files. Such platforms were designed specifically to handle distributed data storage without placing that responsibility on payment-focused blockchains. Developers could store files through dedicated networks while recording references or related transaction information on XRPL. Hence, applications could access external content without requiring XRPL nodes to permanently maintain every large file.

The disagreement reflects different views about how far XRPL functionality should expand beyond payments and asset transfers. Supporters see greater Memo capacity as additional flexibility, while critics emphasize network efficiency and operating requirements.
