In 2010, two founders were building a trading startup and had not settled on a name. The working title was CashCat. They picked Robinhood instead, and the cat went into startup folklore for sixteen years.
On July 1, 2026, Robinhood launched its own Ethereum layer 2. Within days, anonymous developers deployed a token using the discarded name on that exact chain.
On August 6, Robinhood listed it. Spot trading for CASHCAT went live inside the Robinhood app and on Robinhood Legend, making it the first memecoin born on Robinhood Chain to reach the platform's retail audience.
The price move, and why nobody agrees on it
CoinMarketCap's tracking put the listing-day move at $0.0853 to $0.2143 inside fifteen hours, with volume hitting $92.6 million in a single day, roughly seventeen times the size of the token's main liquidity pool.
Other trackers read the same window differently. CoinGecko-sourced data showed $0.1122. CoinMarketCap data cited elsewhere showed $0.1280. A separate feed had $0.0946.
That spread is not a reporting error. It is what a thin market looks like when a retail brokerage opens the taps.

Anyone quoting one of those numbers as the price is quoting a snapshot from a token whose intraday range on August 6 ran from about $0.087 to $0.136, a spread above 56% inside one session.
For context on where it came from, CASHCAT set an all-time high near $0.225 on July 12 with a market cap briefly above $220 million. It then bled down to roughly four cents by early August before tripling off that floor.
Optimisus tracked that first run in the story of how CASHCAT became Robinhood's accidental breakout hit.
The Bitstamp detail worth noticing
One day before the Robinhood listing, Bitstamp added CASHCAT. Robinhood owns Bitstamp.
A subsidiary listing a token twenty-four hours before its parent is either coincidence or sequencing. This detail comes from a single outlet and has not been confirmed by Robinhood, so treat it as reported rather than established.
What is not in dispute is the reversal at the top. Robinhood chief executive Vlad Tenev had dismissed assets without utility as a dead end days before the July launch frenzy, then posted publicly that the chain worked well for memes too.
Robinhood built a chain for stocks and got a casino
This is the part that makes CASHCAT more than a candle. Robinhood Chain was built to host tokenized US equities. Speculative memecoin trading became its defining use case instead.
Robinhood Chain total value locked climbed to roughly $774 million about a month after launch, a 20% weekly increase and one of the fastest ramps for a new Ethereum layer 2. Tokenized real-world assets on the chain reached about $100 million.
Set those side by side. CASHCAT alone has been worth roughly 85% of the value of every tokenized real-world asset on the network built to host them.
The TVL itself is also not what the marketing implies. Established DeFi protocols drive it rather than new applications, with Morpho at 43% and Etherna at 41%, and stablecoin supply forming a large slice.
Early infrastructure partners lined up before launch, including 0x powering swap liquidity and cross-chain access on the chain at go-live.
Activity on the chain has been genuine. Optimisus reported when Robinhood Chain hit $866 million in daily DEX volume inside two weeks, briefly topping Ethereum and Base.
The launchpad wave already collapsed
Most of what launched beside CASHCAT is gone, and the timeline is short enough to matter.
Noxa, the launchpad behind July's wave, stopped accepting launches on July 11 and went dark two days later, having earned an estimated $12 million in fees. Token deployments across the chain's launchpads fell from roughly 35,000 per day in mid-July to about 10,000.
CASHCAT outlasted the cohort it launched with. That is why the current bounce reads as speculative flow consolidating into the one surviving pool rather than a fresh wave of new money.
Fresh launchpad activity has not stopped entirely. Uniswap's Pools launchpad went live on Robinhood Chain around August 5 with permanently locked liquidity, and CASHCAT jumped roughly 33% on that news alone. Solana's original community memecoin has been building on the chain too, with BONK unveiling its Circus launchpad on Robinhood.
Three things a buyer should know
First, there is no revenue model, no fee engine, and no yield. CoinDesk reported that the project's own website describes it as fan fiction with a ticker. That is honest positioning, and it means price is set entirely by sentiment and liquidity depth.
Second, distribution is unusually flat for a memecoin, which cuts both ways. About 41,200 holders, the full 989 million supply already circulating with no locked allocation, and the largest single holder is the Uniswap pool providing liquidity at 2.47%. No insider unlock is coming, and no insider is defending the price either.
Third, and least discussed anywhere: Robinhood is subsidizing gas fees on the chain until late September. Until users start paying their own transaction costs, nobody knows whether the chain's growth reflects adoption or incentives.
The liquidity-to-market-cap ratio sat near 6% on August 6. On a token that size, a single large exit moves the price hard. CertiK rates the asset 3.5 out of 5, and the contract resolves on Robinhood Chain's own explorer, confirming it is native rather than a bridged copy.
Broader retail access has been arriving through other venues as well, including BC.Game adding CASHCAT support as Robinhood Chain activity surged.
What to watch
The listing genuinely changed the buyer pool. Robinhood serves tens of millions of users who will never bridge to a layer 2 or open a DEX, and they can now buy this token in two taps.
Three markers from here. Whether CASHCAT holds above the $0.13 to $0.14 area that capped its earlier recovery attempts. Whether volume stays elevated once the listing novelty fades.
And whether the chain's TVL survives late September, when gas stops being free. That last one tells you more about Robinhood Chain than any memecoin chart will.
