Samsung will unveil its Galaxy Z Fold 8 on Jul. 22 with a chip rated for 100 trillion AI operations per second, deepening the mobile AI race with Google and Apple.

Key Points:

  • Samsung confirmed the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 ahead of its Jul. 22 Unpacked event.
  • The chip handles up to 100 trillion AI operations per second, and Android 17 adds agentic Gemini Intelligence tools.
  • Apple counters with a privacy-first suite, with iOS 27 expected to open text and image generation to third-party models.

Galaxy Z Fold 8 AI Hardware

Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy will power the Fold 8 and the larger Fold 8 Ultra, the two companies confirmed in a joint Weibo post days before the launch event. The "for Galaxy" label refers to a custom version of the silicon that has historically run slightly faster than the standard chip.

The numbers back the marketing. Qualcomm says the processor handles up to 100 trillion operations per second of on-device AI work, roughly double what the previous generation managed, with prime cores clocked at 4.74GHz.

A separate leak reported that the Fold 8 variant carries a fine-tuned neural processing unit, giving it an edge in on-device AI over the Galaxy S26 series that uses the same chip.

Neither company has confirmed that detail, so it should be treated as a rumor for now.

Gemini Intelligence Vs Apple Intelligence

Android 17 arrives on the Fold 8 and Google's upcoming Pixel 11 range this summer, bundling a set of agentic tools under the new Gemini Intelligence banner. Demonstrations showed the system digging through Gmail, notes and photos to finish multi-step jobs, from booking a gym session to assembling a grocery order. One demo even had it retrieving a passport photo to complete a flight booking.

Apple has taken the opposite road.

Its Apple Intelligence suite runs mostly on the handset, leans on privacy and hands harder questions to ChatGPT when its own tools fall short.

Reporting by Mark Gurman indicates iOS 27 will let users pick third-party models for text and image generation, though deep cross-app access of the kind Gemini requires remains uncertain.

Reviewers who compared the three platforms found Gemini closest to a genuine assistant, Samsung's toolkit the broadest and Apple's execution the most polished. Apple Intelligence still requires an iPhone 15 Pro or newer, leaving older handsets out. Samsung's stack, meanwhile, can feel split among Galaxy AI, Bixby and Gemini running side by side.

The hardware gap may prove less decisive than the philosophy gap.

Samsung's foldable line has spent seven years refining its hinge, while Galaxy AI only debuted in 2024 and has since leaned on Google's models rather than a homegrown chatbot. Last year's Galaxy Z Fold 7 shipped with Qualcomm's top Galaxy processor, and with reported price increases of $150 to $200 pushing the new model toward $1,800, the AI story now carries the weight of justifying the tag.
