Deutsche Bank Moves Into Digital Asset Custody

Deutsche Bank, Germany's largest lender, has confirmed plans to launch a regulated digital asset custody service for institutional and corporate clients across Europe before the end of 2026. The announcement, made on September 16, marks one of the most significant moves by a major European bank into the crypto custody space.

The service will initially support Bitcoin ($BTC), Ether ($ETH), and select stablecoins including USDC, EURC, and EURAU.The bank will manage clients' wallets and private keys, allowing them to hold digital assets and transfer them to third parties without building their own custody infrastructure.

Deutsche Bank's initial client base will include corporates, asset managers, hedge funds, custodians, brokers, and sovereign institutions served by its Corporate Bank and Investment Bank. Retail clients are not part of the offering.

MiCA Licence and the Regulatory Path

The bank expects to receive its licence in October under the European Union's Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) framework, according to spokesperson Heinrich Frömsdorf. The service will not go live until that regulatory process is complete.

The custody service will use hardware-based key protection and multi-person approvals for transactions, keeping separate warm and cold storage environments alongside backup and recovery controls. Warm storage stays connected for faster access, while cold storage remains offline for stronger protection.

Gerald Podobnik, co-head of Deutsche Bank's Corporate Bank, said digital assets are not a replacement for the traditional financial system but an important complement to it, framing them as new rails coexisting with existing market infrastructure.

Clearer EU rules under the Markets in Crypto-Assets regulation have reduced legal uncertainty for banks entering the sector.Standard Chartered and BBVA already offer institutional crypto custody, while Commerzbank secured a BaFin crypto-custody licence in 2023. Even so, Deutsche Bank's scale puts this move in a different category.

Tokenised financial instruments sit on the bank's longer roadmap, though no timeline has been given for that expansion.
