Germany's Sparkassen savings banks began offering crypto spot trading in their banking app on October 19, rolling the service out in phases through DekaBank. The service supports $BTC, $ETH, $XRP, $SOL and $POL.
The offering is called "Krypto – powered by Deka". According to Coinpaprika, the German Savings Banks Association (DSGV) confirmed the start to the news agency dpa, and only customers of banks that have already switched the service on can use it.
How the Sparkassen crypto service works
DekaBank is the securities house of the Sparkassen. E-Fundresearch reports that each order costs €0.99 and a securities account is not required. Trading and custody run centrally through Deka's wallet, and the service is based on a MiCAR licence DekaBank received from BaFin in 2025.
Spreads are an extra cost. Block-Builders notes that Deka does not state the size of the spread in its product materials, which makes total costs hard to compare with other providers.
Customers do not hold their own keys. Bitcoin.com's German edition reports that DekaBank holds the coins in cooperation with Börse Stuttgart, and withdrawals are possible only to wallets at certain approved crypto service providers.
Phased rollout and risk warnings
There is no single nationwide start date. Golem reports that, according to the DSGV, 30 to 40 more savings banks are due to join each month, and the association aims to have a large share of interested institutions connected in the first half of 2027. DSGV board member Joachim Schmalzl said each Sparkasse decides for itself when to start.
The product is aimed at self-directed customers. Golem adds that the DSGV does not plan advice or broad active promotion of the service. Regional outlet Stadt Bremerhaven reports that the app explicitly warns of extreme price swings and the possible loss of the entire investment.
The launch gives customers of Germany's public savings banks a regulated route into major cryptocurrencies inside an app they already use, though with custody and withdrawal limits that differ from self-custody or a standalone exchange.
