Midnight is a separate blockchain that connects to Cardano as its first “partner chain.” It was built by Input Output (IOG), the same engineering company behind Cardano, but runs its own blocks, validators and rules.

The two networks are linked in three main ways. NIGHT, Midnight’s token, lives on Cardano as a native asset. Midnight nodes read data directly from Cardano. And Cardano stake pool operators are designed to eventually help run Midnight.

Is Midnight a Cardano Layer 2?

No. Midnight is not built on top of Cardano the way a layer 2 is built on Ethereum.

Midnight keeps its own ledger, consensus mechanism, smart contract environment and two-part token system. What makes it a “partner” is where its security is meant to come from. A new chain normally spends years recruiting validators. Midnight’s plan is to borrow Cardano’s existing community of stake pool operators instead.

The separation works both ways. Midnight’s documentation describes a “firewall property,” meaning Midnight can fail without putting Cardano at risk.

How Does Midnight Read Data From Cardano?

Every Midnight node is wired to Cardano. The node is built on the Polkadot SDK, also called Substrate, with added partner chain components. Each node needs a constant connection to Cardano through a database filled by cardano-db-sync, a tool that copies Cardano’s blockchain data into a format the node can query.

How Does NIGHT Work Across Both Chains?

NIGHT exists in two forms, and the version you hold decides what you can do with it.

cNIGHT On Cardano

NIGHT on Cardano is called cNIGHT. When you withdraw NIGHT from any exchange today, you receive cNIGHT on a Cardano address. Most NIGHT reaches Midnight through this Cardano path.

You don’t need to move cNIGHT to use Midnight. Holding it on Cardano can still generate DUST, Midnight’s fee resource. Generation begins about 12 hours after you register your address, because of cross-chain confirmation. Wallets such as GeroWallet already let users generate DUST from cNIGHT without a bridge.

The Planned Bridge To mNIGHT

Midnight’s design also includes a one-way bridge, set out in proposal MIP-20, that locks cNIGHT on Cardano and issues Midnight-native mNIGHT. Locking tokens on one chain while they are active on the other is meant to keep the total supply capped at 24 billion. Midnight’s mainnet node release notes, however, describe the bridge code as shipping inactive, with a governance action required to enable it. Users should confirm bridge support in their wallet before trying it.

What Role Do Cardano Stake Pool Operators Play?

Stake pool operators (SPOs) are the independent operators who produce Cardano’s blocks. They are central to Midnight’s long-term design.

Today’s Federated Validators

Midnight launched with nine federated node partners: Worldpay, Bullish, MoneyGram, Pairpoint by Vodafone, eToro, AlphaTON Capital, Google Cloud, Blockdaemon and Shielded Technologies. A federated network is run by a fixed, approved group rather than open participation. Midnight’s node documentation, last updated October 6, still lists these permissioned operators as the validator set, with SPOs supported at a later date.

The Planned Handover To SPOs

Midnight’s roadmap places SPO onboarding in a phase called Mōhalu, followed by Hua, where block production moves to the community. Every Midnight block producer must first run a Cardano stake pool, and SPOs will be selected in proportion to their delegated ADA stake. On testnet, a registered SPO joined the validator rotation two Cardano epochs later.

More than 180 Cardano SPOs took part in Midnight’s Testnet-02. Charles Hoskinson has said participating SPOs and delegators will earn both ADA and NIGHT, with NIGHT rewards paid from a protocol-managed reserve rather than newly minted tokens.

How Do The Two Communities Overlap?

Cardano users were Midnight’s first token holders.

  • Glacier Drop: ADA holders received 50% of the airdropped NIGHT, Bitcoin holders 20%, and holders on six other chains the remaining 30%.
  • Thawing schedule: Claimed NIGHT unlocks in four 25% installments over 360 days. The thawing period ends on December 4, 2026, followed by a 90-day grace period.
  • Shared assets: The USDM stablecoin moves natively between Cardano and Midnight, locking on Cardano and being issued one-to-one on Midnight.

The connection also carries risk. The Cardano wallet SecondFi, formerly Yoroi, was drained between June 21 and 23. Because NIGHT allocations can only be redeemed to the original Cardano address, SecondFi warned affected users not to claim NIGHT into compromised wallets. As of October 20, users had moved more than 100 million ADA and 22 million NIGHT through its recovery tool.

Conclusion

Midnight runs as an independent privacy chain while relying on Cardano in specific ways. NIGHT originates on Cardano as cNIGHT and can generate DUST without leaving Cardano. Midnight nodes read Cardano data directly, and Cardano SPOs are the designated path for decentralizing block production.
