HSBC Group CEO Georges Elhedery announced on November 2, 2026, that the bank’s new Hong Kong dollar-backed stablecoin, RedCoin (RCHKD), has surpassed 50,000 users. Speaking on the opening day of Hong Kong FinTech Week, Elhedery said the stablecoin reached this milestone just over a week after its public launch on October 23.

RedCoin is currently available to more than 3.3 million users through HSBC’s PayMe mobile application. Each token is backed one-to-one by segregated liquid fiat reserves. Customers can use the stablecoin to make payments at participating merchants and top up their wallets.

The launch marks an important development in Hong Kong’s digital asset market. RedCoin is one of only two stablecoins licensed under the Hong Kong Monetary Authority’s new regulatory framework. The other is Standard Chartered’s Anchorpoint.

HSBC plans to integrate RedCoin into its main mobile banking application, making it available to general customers across HSBC and Hang Seng Bank. The expansion will also allow users to subscribe to tokenized investment products, including money market funds. Alongside the stablecoin milestone, HSBC announced plans to establish a Global AI and Emerging Technology Institute in Hong Kong’s Northern Metropolis by early 2027.

HSBC’s existing customer base gives RedCoin an adoption advantage

One of the biggest challenges facing digital currency projects is attracting users. Many require customers to download new wallets, create accounts, and fund them before they can use their tokens.

HSBC avoided this challenge by integrating RedCoin into its existing PayMe payment application. On X, @Pleb pointed out that reaching 50,000 users becomes much easier when a product is introduced directly to an existing customer base of 3.3 million PayMe users. According to Pleb, obtaining the regulatory license was the more difficult part of the process.

Another observer on X, Farhad, described the rapid adoption as an important market signal. Farhad argued that when a large financial institution like HSBC launches a stablecoin, distribution is no longer a major challenge.

RedCoin already benefits from an ecosystem connected to more than 100,000 participating merchants. This gives the stablecoin immediate real-world payment use cases, something many decentralized cryptocurrency projects struggle to achieve even after years of development.

HSBC’s private blockchain limits RedCoin’s wider crypto use

Although RedCoin’s early adoption highlights the advantages of institutional distribution, its underlying technology is different from that of traditional cryptocurrencies. The stablecoin operates on a private, permissioned ledger built using Hyperledger Besu technology. This means HSBC controls the underlying blockchain and determines how it can be accessed.

X user Clay also  highlighted the growing competition between traditional banks to establish their presence in digital payments. Clay noted that Hong Kong had received HSBC’s Hong Kong dollar-backed stablecoin and Standard Chartered’s tokenized deposits within a couple of weeks of each other.

This centralized structure provides the security and regulatory controls required by financial authorities. However, it also limits how the stablecoin can be used outside HSBC’s ecosystem.

Because RedCoin operates on a closed network, users cannot transfer their tokens to independent digital wallets or connect them to decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols. Its use is therefore restricted to services supported within HSBC’s network. The bank’s planned Global AI and Emerging Technology Institute will focus on areas including blockchain technology and post-quantum cryptography.
