The token is named after the infamous laptop controversy that became a fixture of US political debate beginning in 2020, when the New York Post published a story about a computer belonging to Biden that had been abandoned at a Delaware repair shop. The story and its contents remained contested for years, making it one of the more recognizable political flashpoints in recent memory.
The LAPTOP token will launch on Coinbase's Base network, an Ethereum Layer-2 blockchain. A total supply of 1 billion tokens is planned. Founders, including Hunter Biden, are set to receive 30% of that supply, with those tokens locked from sale for six months and vested over two years, according to reports.
The remaining allocation is designed with community participation in mind. Twenty percent of the total supply is earmarked for distribution across several groups: investors who lost money on the $TRUMP memecoin, Hunter Biden's Substack subscribers, and followers of video journalist Andrew Callaghan. The project also includes a token-burning mechanism tied to a set of predetermined political and financial events.
A Direct Counter to $TRUMP and the PolitiFi Wave
The launch is being widely interpreted as a pointed response to the political memecoin trend that has accelerated since President Donald Trump and his associates expanded their digital asset businesses. $TRUMP, launched in January 2025, reached a market capitalisation of roughly $15 billion at its peak before declining sharply. It has recently traded around $2, with its market value falling to approximately $600 million.
Biden has previously described decentralised digital assets as "an inevitable future," signalling that this move is not entirely opportunistic. Whether $LAPTOP can generate sustained retail interest beyond its initial novelty will depend on community engagement and the broader appetite for PolitiFi instruments, a segment that has proven both lucrative and volatile in equal measure.
