A proposal to cut Ethereum’s block times gained institutional support this week when Ethereum Institutional, a group representing large asset managers and infrastructure providers active on the network, backed Ethlabs’ EIP-8198. The proposal is designed to shorten the roughly 12-second gap between Ethereum blocks, a figure that has stayed largely unchanged since the network’s move to proof of stake and has become a competitive disadvantage against faster chains that produce blocks in a fraction of a second.
Faster block times matter most for applications where users expect near-instant confirmation, including trading platforms, payment apps, and on-chain games. Ethereum’s slower block time has pushed a meaningful share of that activity toward layer 2 rollups or competing layer 1 chains, even though Ethereum remains the base layer securing the largest share of value locked in decentralized finance.
Past proposals to speed up Ethereum’s block production have run into a consistent objection: shortening the time between blocks tightens the window validators have to receive, verify, and propagate new blocks across the network, which can push smaller or less well-connected validators out of the process if they can’t keep up. That risks concentrating block production among a smaller number of well-resourced operators, undermining the decentralization Ethereum has prioritized since its founding.
EIP-8198 is structured specifically to avoid that outcome. The proposal first adjusts existing network timing parameters, such as how long validators are given to broadcast and attest to blocks, to create technical headroom within the current block time. Only in a second, later phase does it actually reduce the block time itself, once the network has absorbed the timing changes without excluding smaller validators. That sequencing is the detail that appears to have won over Ethereum Institutional’s support, since it addresses the centralization concern that sank earlier, more abrupt proposals to speed up the chain.
Ethereum Institutional’s backing carries weight beyond a single endorsement because the group represents asset managers and infrastructure providers who depend on predictable network performance for products like staking services and tokenized funds built on Ethereum. Faster, more predictable block times would reduce settlement risk for those products in ways that matter more to institutional users than to individual traders, who are typically more sensitive to trading fees than to the exact number of seconds between blocks. That distinction may explain why institutional backers moved to support the proposal well before it has cleared the more technical stages of Ethereum’s standard improvement process.
