The claim came from Ice Universe, a tipster with a long record on Apple hardware. Writing on the Chinese platform Weibo, the leaker said the Pro Max will exclusively carry a variable aperture, because the mechanism needs internal volume the smaller chassis cannot spare.
Ice Universe framed the split as a trade off, telling followers that top tier imaging now means accepting a phone with "the weight of a brick."
That reading cuts against months of reporting that both Pro models would share the upgrade, a divide Apple itself has never signaled at any point.
The same tipster now suggests the larger phone could take an exclusive telephoto module as well, built around 6x optical zoom and a five refraction prism, though that claim carried hedged wording.

A variable aperture works like the iris in a DSLR, opening and closing to control light. Every iPhone built so far has used a fixed opening, currently f/1.78 on the Pro models, which stays wide open in every shot. The change would hand photographers optical control over depth of field, exposure and shutter speed, and the payoff shows up most clearly in video shot under shifting light.
Xiaomi and Huawei flagships have offered the feature for years, so Apple would be joining an established field.
Internal files from Apple supplier Tata Electronics, dumped online in June by a ransomware group, carried a diagnostics log holding calibration data tied to an aperture actuator. That log named a new Sony IMX905 sensor for the iPhone 18 Pro Max, replacing the part used in the current model. It said nothing at all about the smaller Pro.
Apple has divided its Pro cameras before, giving the iPhone 15 Pro Max a tetraprism telephoto system and 5x optical zoom in 2023 while the iPhone 15 Pro stopped at 3x. Apple added that lens to the smaller model a year later with the iPhone 16 Pro.
Ice Universe earlier pegged the iPhone 18 Pro Max at 240 grams and 9 millimeters thick, heavier and chunkier than the phone it now stands to replace this fall.
Screen sizes are expected to hold at 6.3 and 6.9 inches. Apple has confirmed none of these details, and camera specifications routinely move in the final weeks before a September launch.
