Aerodrome Finance's $AERO token is approaching the $1 billion market capitalisation mark, raising the question of whether it can join the ranks of established DeFi blue chips. According to a post from @BSCNews, the token of @aeroxyz is up about 74% over the past month, lifting its market cap to roughly $966 million.
Other data providers show a smaller gain over a similar window. Aerodrome's $AERO token climbed 48.1% over roughly four weeks through Oct. 10, outperforming bitcoin and ether , according to Cryptonews. Differences in measurement windows and price snapshots likely explain the gap. CoinGecko lists a market cap of about $990 million , so the $1 billion level is within reach.
Merger with Velodrome is the main catalyst
The rally comes ahead of a significant restructuring. Aerodrome (AERO) and Velodrome (VELO) are merging into a single cross-chain decentralized exchange set to launch on October 21. The merger will consolidate both tokens into one AERO token, with AERO holders receiving 94.5% and VELO holders 5.5% of the new allocation.
The unified protocol, called Aero, is also expanding its reach. The launch is scheduled for Oct. 21 across Base, Ethereum mainnet, OP Mainnet, Arc, Ink, Robinhood Chain and Arbitrum. That matches the original post, which says the platform launches on @RobinhoodCrypto and @arbitrum later this month. The market data also shows rising activity on the exchange: DefiLlama showed Aerodrome holding $396.3 million in total value locked in its Oct. 10 snapshot, compared with $339.1 million on Sept. 12.
Cryptonews cautioned that market data does not establish how much of $AERO's advance the merger update explains.
The post also cites a pledge from Aero's founder to double its market share. Separately, AERO jumped 16% on Sunday before paring gains to 8%, after co-founder Alexander Cutler promised "a lot of fireworks."
Aerodrome has a close link to @Coinbase's ecosystem. Velodrome launched first on Optimism before Aerodrome followed on Base, Coinbase's chain. The post says Coinbase Stocks reached $2 billion in volume in under two months. We could not independently verify that figure. Earlier reporting noted that liquidity in Aerodrome pools remained thin, with total balances of $12.97 million across 10 major pools despite large cumulative trading volume.
Whether $AERO earns blue chip status will depend on how the merged protocol performs after Oct. 21. The token remains well below its peak: CoinGecko lists an all-time high of $2.32. As with any token that has rallied sharply into a catalyst, price moves after launch can be volatile.
