CNBC’s Jim Cramer has made it clear which hard asset he trusts more when building a long-term portfolio.

On the recent episode of Mad Money, a caller said he had used much of his savings for a down payment on his first home and asked how to rebuild his investments.

“As the younger investor recently became a first-time homebuyer using a significant portion of my investment assets as a down payment. How should I think about rebuilding and rebalancing my portfolio going forward and what principles or strategies? Would you recommend for someone in my situation to make smart long-term investing decisions while balancing new financial responsibilities?” the caller asked.

Bitcoin, gold, and GLD

Cramer told him to split his money equally, with half in five individual stocks he likes and half in an index fund. He then suggested adding “something like Bitcoin or gold” to the mix.

“Your money that you invest equally five stocks that you like and then index fund. So index for 50% stocks for 50% if you want to you can sure it was something like Bitcoin or gold, I prefer you to use the gold bullion,” Cramer advised.

GLD is the SPDR Gold Shares exchange-traded fund, which tracks the price of gold. Cramer did not call Bitcoin a bad choice. He only made it clear which one he would pick.

“The GLD this way each month you put money to work and you get the individual stocks that you like,” he suggested.

He also told the caller to “expect corrections and don’t rely on hope as an investing strategy.”

Bitcoin gets a partial pass

Earlier in the show, Cramer criticized people who “throw away their money on buying garbage cryptocurrencies.”

He set Bitcoin and Ethereum apart, describing them as the better-known, more vetted currencies.

“Each morning in some sort of shrewd pump-and-dump gambit. It's the same reason why people so so many people throw away their money on buying garbage cryptocurrencies. We make it by Ethereum or Bitcoin the better-known more vetted currencies. Many of us simply can't resist what we perceive as a bargain emphasis by the way on perceive,” Cramer said.

His preference comes as both assets trade below their records. Gold was near $4,140 an ounce on Wednesday, about 26% below its January peak of roughly $5,608. At the time of writing, Bitcoin was around $82,700, about 34% below its October 2025 record of $126,198.
