Quantum computing is advancing faster than many expect, TRON CEO Justin Sun says. While most people believe quantum computing is still far away, Justin Sun today said crypto attacks are looming.
Quantum computers rapidly threatening crypto
In an interview organized by FINTECH.TV, Justin Sun said the dangers posed by quantum computers are real and could affect cryptocurrencies within the next year or two. The TRON CEO anticipates that breakthroughs in quantum computing infrastructure are making machines more powerful. This means computers’ ability to break cryptographic systems is becoming more imminent.
The executive recognized potential dangers to public-key cryptography, the backbone of blockchain networks. Crypto networks such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, and many others rely on cryptographic signatures like ECDSA, which are more vulnerable. According to Sun, advancing, powerful, fault-tolerant quantum computers could soon use Shor’s algorithm to break cryptographic signatures more easily than people think.
Currently, most crypto assets are kept in addresses with exposed public keys, putting them at risk of quantum computer attacks. Sun warns the imminent threat is likely within two years, as attackers can collect encrypted data now and decrypt it as quantum computing technology advances.
TRON getting ready for the post-quantum era
Today’s quantum computers can’t break cryptographic networks. However, the threat is growing as the technology becomes more powerful. This explains why Justin Sun said TRON is working on post-quantum cryptography.
Last month, the network announced that post-quantum cryptography is available on its testnet. The development marked a significant step toward preparing its infrastructure for potential advances in quantum computing.
This commitment matters because experts project that quantum computing could eventually overpower some of the cryptographic methods currently used to safeguard crypto assets. Post-quantum cryptography aims to build security controls created to resist attacks from powerful quantum computers.
