TLDR

  • Kakao Pay and KakaoBank signed a memorandum of understanding with Fireblocks
  • The deal covers digital asset opportunities, including stablecoins
  • The companies will run proof-of-concept tests for onchain infrastructure
  • No launch, investment or implementation timeline was shared
  • This follows a separate July MoU between Kakao Group and Circle

Kakao Pay and KakaoBank have signed a memorandum of understanding with crypto infrastructure provider Fireblocks. The agreement was announced Monday.

The deal will see the companies explore digital asset opportunities together. Stablecoins are a key part of that exploration.

Under the memorandum, the three companies plan to run proof-of-concept tests. These tests will focus on digital asset infrastructure.

The infrastructure is meant to fit South Korea’s regulatory, security and service requirements. The goal is to build a secure onchain system for the country’s growing digital asset market.

The announcement did not include a timeline. There is no confirmed launch date, investment figure or rollout plan at this stage.

What Kakao Pay and KakaoBank Do

Kakao Pay runs mobile payment and financial services in South Korea. It is a well known name in the country’s fintech space.

KakaoBank is one of South Korea’s largest internet-only banks. Both companies sit under the wider Kakao ecosystem.

Fireblocks supplies digital asset infrastructure to institutions around the world. The company says it works with more than 2,500 institutions, including over 100 banks.

Part of a Wider Stablecoin Push

This agreement builds on earlier moves by Kakao Group. In July, Kakao Group signed a separate memorandum with stablecoin issuer Circle.

That deal focused on blockchain-based payment infrastructure. It also looked at digital asset technology more broadly.

The Circle partnership included talks around won-denominated stablecoins. Related services were also part of that discussion.

Kakao Pay and KakaoBank join a growing list of South Korean firms looking into stablecoins. This comes as the country continues building out its regulatory framework for digital assets.

Other financial companies have already taken steps in this space. In May, KB Financial Group completed a pilot for a won-denominated stablecoin.

That pilot covered issuance, offline merchant payments and cross-border remittances. It marked one of the more complete tests run by a major South Korean bank.

Fintech company Toss also moved into this area. In July, Toss partnered with Optimism and Sunnyside Labs.

That partnership is focused on a proof of concept for won-based stablecoin payment infrastructure. It reflects the same trend of South Korean fintech firms testing stablecoin systems ahead of clearer rules.
