Kenya's Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has moved its academic credential verification system onchain, anchoring more than 30 million records to the Avalanche (@avax) blockchain. The deployment places over 30 million records on the Avalanche network, targeting the thousands of fake academic certificates reported every year and allowing employers, academic institutions, and other organisations to confirm the authenticity of educational records.
The system builds on an e-certificate platform KNEC rolled out earlier this year. For Avalanche, this deployment represents one of the largest public-sector projects on its blockchain to date, and while the network is best known for its role in decentralised finance, the Kenyan project signals a growing move into government record management.
The scale of Kenya's certificate fraud problem has made the intervention urgent. A 2024 audit by the Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA) found that out of 47,000 certificates reviewed from government agencies, over 10,000 were flagged as fake, roughly one in four.Out of 29,000 officers whose certificates were subjected to verification across 195 ministries, departments, and agencies, 787 were found to have secured appointments or promotions through fraudulent documents, with investigators uncovering 859 cases of forged academic certificates.
According to Kenya's Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission, the true numbers could be even higher, since the country has long lacked a centralised database of degree, diploma, and certificate holders, making verification an arduous task for employers. The KNEC system directly addresses that gap by giving any authorised party instant, tamper-proof access to verified records.
Government integrations like Kenya's may broaden the real-world use cases for Avalanche's blockchain infrastructure, allowing the technology to demonstrate value far beyond its original finance and asset-tokenisation origins.Neither KNEC nor Avalanche have indicated whether the project is expected to drive direct demand for Avalanche's native token, $AVAX.
