KuCoin temporarily closed Monero (XMR) deposit and withdrawal services on October 10, 2026, in an announcement titled “KuCoin Has Temporarily Closed the Deposit and Withdrawal Services of Monero (XMR)”
The exchange cited “essential wallet maintenance” as the reason, without disclosing a specific technical issue or a target resumption date
XMR spot and margin trading continued uninterrupted on KuCoin throughout the pause, with only the movement of coins onto and off the platform affected
KuCoin froze deposits and withdrawals for Monero on October 10, 2026, in an announcement posted to its official notice board at 14:49 local server time. The exchange described the pause as “essential wallet maintenance,” a routine-sounding label that exchanges commonly use when they need to patch, resync or otherwise service the node infrastructure that tracks a token’s blockchain without exposing the specific vulnerability or bug that prompted the work.
Monero’s architecture makes this kind of maintenance more involved than it would be for a typical account-based blockchain. XMR relies on ring signatures, stealth addresses and confidential transaction amounts to obscure senders, receivers and values, which means the wallet software an exchange runs to track deposits has to reconstruct spendable balances from encrypted outputs rather than simply reading a public ledger balance. Any update to that wallet software, or any resynchronization after a missed block or chain reorganization, can require taking deposit and withdrawal processing offline until the node is fully caught up and verified.
KuCoin’s notice gave no indication of when service would resume, a common practice for maintenance windows where the exchange wants flexibility if the underlying issue takes longer than expected to resolve. Users holding XMR on the exchange were not prevented from trading the asset on KuCoin’s spot and margin markets during the freeze, since order matching and balance crediting inside the exchange’s own ledger do not depend on the external blockchain being reachable. Only transfers that need to touch the actual Monero network, meaning new deposits crediting an account or withdrawals sending coins off the platform, were affected.
Exchanges pause deposits and withdrawals for privacy coins like Monero more frequently than for more transparent assets such as Bitcoin or Ethereum, in part because privacy-preserving designs are harder to audit in real time and in part because several jurisdictions have pushed exchanges to tighten controls around assets that resist standard transaction monitoring. KuCoin did not frame the October 10 pause in those terms, describing it purely as a maintenance matter, but the episode is a reminder that Monero support on centralized exchanges tends to come with more frequent and less-explained interruptions than support for more conventional digital assets.
KuCoin said it would update the same announcement once deposit and withdrawal services for XMR resume, and it encouraged users to monitor the notice board directly rather than relying on third-party reports. The exchange did not say whether any user funds were at risk during the maintenance window, and it offered no compensation or fee waivers tied to the pause, consistent with how it has historically handled similar maintenance-related freezes on other assets.
