  • Joseph Lubin defended Buterin’s novel as supporting Ethereum’s long-term vision.
  • Buterin’s story explores governance models using AI and voting.
  • Lubin reaffirmed Ethereum Foundation’s role protecting neutrality and privacy.

Joseph Lubin has publicly defended Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, describing him as the network’s most important steward amid growing criticism surrounding his latest science fiction novel. According to Lubin, Buterin’s decision to write fiction should not be viewed as a distraction from Ethereum. Instead, he argued that the project reflects Buterin’s continued commitment to advancing ideas that support decentralized technology and governance.

The discussion emerged as some Ethereum community members questioned Buterin’s priorities during a difficult period for the network. Ethereum has faced sustained market pressure in recent months, while the Ethereum Foundation has also experienced notable personnel changes.

Despite those concerns, Lubin strongly backed Buterin’s work. In comments shared on social media, the Consensys CEO described Buterin as an “enormously effective communicator” and said he remains the most significant contributor to Ethereum’s long-term vision.

Lubin Says Novel Advances Ethereum’s Mission

Buterin recently revealed that he is writing a science fiction novel focused on decentralized governance. He announced the project on Farcaster and later published the first two chapters on his personal website. The story takes place in a fictional nation where governance systems rely on concepts such as quadratic voting and artificial intelligence-assisted decision-making. Through the narrative, Buterin explores how decentralized communities could address complex social and economic challenges.

Moreover, the novel examines weaknesses commonly associated with decentralized autonomous organizations. These include governance imbalances, coordination difficulties, and financial incentives that can influence decision-making. According to Lubin, these themes directly connect to Ethereum’s broader objectives. He argued that fiction provides an effective way to test governance concepts and communicate them to a wider audience.

He added that anyone criticizing Buterin’s literary work may be missing its larger purpose. Lubin believes the novel represents another avenue through which Buterin contributes to Ethereum’s development and adoption.

Ethereum Vision Remains Central

Beyond defending the novel, Lubin emphasized the importance of Ethereum’s role in the digital economy. He said the world needs a neutral platform capable of supporting global coordination, digital assets, and open participation.

Additionally, Lubin stressed that values such as censorship resistance, privacy, open-source development, and credible neutrality remain essential to Ethereum’s future. He noted that the Ethereum Foundation continues to play a critical role in protecting those principles.

His comments arrive as community members debate Ethereum’s direction. Nevertheless, Lubin maintained that Buterin’s work, including his latest novel, supports the network’s long-term mission rather than distracting from it.

Lubin’s remarks place Buterin’s novel at the center of a broader discussion about Ethereum’s future. By defending the project and praising Buterin’s leadership, he reinforced his view that the Ethereum co-founder remains the ecosystem’s key steward despite ongoing criticism.
