Gavin Wood is a British computer scientist who helped build Ethereum and then left to create Polkadot. He co-founded Ethereum and created Polkadot and Kusama. He also coined the phrase Web 3.0 in 2014. Today, he runs Parity Technologies and is focused on delivering Polkadot's next upgrades.

Who Is Gavin Wood?

Wood had a strong technical background long before he entered crypto.

Early Career Before Crypto

He was born in Lancaster, England. He earned a Master of Engineering from the University of York in 2002 and completed his PhD in 2005. Before Ethereum, he worked as a research scientist at Microsoft.

His Role In Building Ethereum

Wood joined the Ethereum team in early 2014. His job was to help Vitalik Buterin turn a whitepaper into a working blockchain. His key contributions were:

  • The Yellow Paper. This was the first formal specification of any blockchain protocol. It defines the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), the software that runs smart contracts.
  • Solidity. He proposed and helped develop this programming language for writing smart contracts.
  • POC-1. As CTO, he coded the first working version of Ethereum.
  • Leadership. He was the Ethereum Foundation's first chief technology officer.

Why Did Gavin Wood Leave Ethereum?

Wood left the Ethereum Foundation in January 2016. He never gave an official reason. Reports suggest it was about funding for the development team, or frustration with slow progress on upgrades and performance.

He stayed in the industry. With Jutta Steiner, he founded Parity Technologies, first called Ethcore. In early 2016, the company released the Parity Ethereum client, written in Rust. A client is the software that nodes run to take part in a blockchain network. Wood later founded the Web3 Foundation, a nonprofit that supports decentralized internet infrastructure, starting with Polkadot.

What Is Polkadot And How Is It Different?

Polkadot was Wood's answer to the limits of single-chain designs.

Parachains And Shared Security

Polkadot links many separate blockchains, called parachains, to a central Relay Chain. The Relay Chain provides shared security, so each chain does not need its own validator set. Polkadot 2.0 is now live. It replaced two-year parachain auctions with Agile Coretime, a system that lets projects buy computing time in bulk or on demand.

JAM: The Next Architecture

JAM stands for Join-Accumulate Machine. Wood released its graypaper at Token2049 in Dubai in April 2024. JAM would replace the Relay Chain with a more modular, minimal design. It also swaps WebAssembly for the Polkadot Virtual Machine (PVM).

JAM is not live yet. In June 2026, Polkadot said 23 JAM implementers had passed the first milestone. In September, Parity set 2027 as the target for moving parachain functionality to JAM in production.

What Is Gavin Wood Working On In 2026?

His focus has moved from research to delivery.

Back As Parity CEO

In October 2022, Wood stepped down as Parity CEO to become chief architect. He returned as CEO in August 2025. In a July 29, 2026 note, he said the architecture is now defined and his job is to deliver. The note came as Pierre Aubert left after almost three years as VP of Engineering.

Tokenomics And Identity

Polkadot's tokenomics changed in 2026. On March 14, annual issuance was cut by about 54%, and a 2.1 billion DOT supply cap took effect.

Wood's team is also building Project Individuality, a proof of personhood system. Proof of personhood confirms that a user is a unique human without revealing who they are. The system uses zero-knowledge proofs and Bandersnatch Ring VRF. A zero-knowledge proof lets someone prove a fact without sharing the data behind it. Separately, on September 25, Polkadot introduced a privacy initiative that lets users verify their identity without disclosing personal details.

How Did Gavin Wood Shape The Idea Of Web3?

Wood's influence reaches beyond the code he wrote. He helped define the ideas the wider industry now uses.

The Man Who Named Web3

Wood coined the phrase Web 3.0 in 2014. In November 2021, Wired described him as the "father of Web3." It also reported his view that decentralized technology would help protect liberal democracy.

His view of blockchain has always centered on systems rather than trading. He once said he wanted to build a digital system that does not depend on the existing social order, and that he dislikes crypto "gambling." He has also described Ethereum as "one computer for the entire planet."

A Researcher First

Wood calls himself a researcher, a scientist and an academic, and says curiosity is what drives him. His written work shows this. He has authored three major specifications:

  • The Ethereum Yellow Paper (2014), which formally defined the EVM.
  • The Polkadot White Paper (2016), which introduced heterogeneous sharding and shared security. Heterogeneous sharding means running many different kinds of blockchains in parallel under one security system.
  • The JAM Gray Paper (2024), which outlines Polkadot's next core protocol.

Beyond The Code

Wood is still the majority shareholder of Parity Technologies. In 2022, he donated $5.8 million in cryptocurrency to support Ukraine after Russia's invasion. He also performs as a DJ. He played the graduation party for Polkadot's Blockchain Academy in Hong Kong, where developers finish a five-week boot camp.

Conclusion

Gavin Wood wrote Ethereum's formal specification, proposed Solidity, and coined the term Web3. He then built Polkadot around shared security and connected chains. Today he leads Parity as it moves JAM toward a 2027 production target, applies a 2.1 billion DOT supply cap, and develops Project Individuality for privacy-focused identity.

Conclusion

Gavin Wood wrote Ethereum's formal specification, proposed Solidity, and built Polkadot around shared security and connected chains. Today he leads Parity as it moves JAM toward a 2027 production target and develops Project Individuality. DOT trades just above $1.10, and analysts are watching resistance between $1.19 and $1.25.
