Early today, hackers breached Mercado Bitcoin, Brazil’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, stealing roughly $38 million in digital assets. When the company spotted the massive theft, it locked down the platform, freezing all customer deposits and withdrawals. The exchange quickly partnered with blockchain trackers like Chainalysis and digital token creators Tether and Circle.
By tracking the stolen money across the public network, they successfully blocked the hackers from moving $11 million. Mercado Bitcoin publicly promised that its own corporate cash will cover the rest of the damage, but the platform currently remains closed to users.

Social media reaction was mixed; some were furious, others were relieved. Crypto enthusiast on X, @Gerbest, pointed out a massive security double standard, complaining that normal customers must use two-factor authentication, confirm emails, and wait 48 hours just to move a tiny amount of Bitcoin. Meanwhile, the hacker bypassed everything and stole millions in 30 minutes.
Another user on X, @WagnerFern, warned that even if the exchange replaces the missing money, terrified customers will likely rush to withdraw 70 per cent of their funds when the platform reopens, creating a massive financial crisis for the business.
Meanwhile, @wagmi_bitcoio expressed relief on X, saying that customer money was safe, but demanded the company reveal exactly how the hackers broke in.

How companies can freeze stolen crypto
The $11 million blocked during the Mercado Bitcoin hack shows how the Brazilian exchange used centralized digital dollars to stop the thieves. Many people believe cryptocurrency is completely invisible and impossible to stop, but this hack proves that idea is outdated. While no single person or company can freeze pure Bitcoin, a massive portion of the crypto market runs on stablecoins. These are digital dollars, like USDT or USDC, created by centralized corporations.
When a tracking firm like Chainalysis spots stolen stablecoins moving on the public blockchain, they immediately alert the companies that issued them. Because stablecoin creators have central control over their specific tokens, they can add the hacker’s digital wallet to a global blacklist. The moment this happens, the stolen tokens are frozen in place.
The hacker can still see the money in their wallet, but the computer network will physically reject any attempt to send, swap, or sell it.
Brazil’s history of crypto collapses
This is not the first time Brazilian crypto users have faced a platform disaster. In 2019, a Brazilian crypto investment firm called Atlas Quantum collapsed completely. After suffering a data leak and facing government pressure, the company froze customer withdrawals. Users were trapped, unable to access their own money, and the company eventually failed to pay them back. In a separate incident in 2025, hackers breached a Brazilian Central Bank service provider, stole $140 million, and laundered a massive chunk of it straight into Bitcoin and Ethereum.
When a platform reopens after a major hack, users panic. Thousands of customers will log in at the exact same minute to transfer their digital coins off the exchange and into private, self-custody wallets. If Mercado Bitcoin does not have enough liquid cash sitting in reserve to pay out the 70 per cent withdrawal wave, the business will run out of money. The company will be forced to permanently freeze all accounts, leaving the remaining users with nothing.
Meanwhile, Brazilian Finance Minister Dario Durigan announced that the government will offer specialized business loans to help companies manage the financial strain of two massive economic overhauls.
