@moonpay has launched PayBox, a non-custodial payment vault that plugs directly into @claudeai and @ChatGPT, allowing AI agents to swap tokens, bridge assets, book flights, and make purchases through ordinary conversation. The product went live on July 29, 2026, and is available at paybox.sh.
How PayBox works
PayBox allows users to execute crypto transactions and online purchases through conversations with ChatGPT and Claude. Users connect it to either platform via a custom connector and describe transactions in natural language. The assistant then researches and prepares the transaction before executing it under permissions set by the user.
Users can choose between two permission models. "Always Ask" requires passkey approval for every transaction, while "Autonomous" allows the AI to operate within spending limits and rules selected by the user. MoonPay demoed the product live by purchasing $VIRTUAL using Claude.
Wallet keys are divided through multiparty computation and stored across secure hardware environments, meaning neither MoonPay nor the AI assistant can independently access the complete private key or authorize transactions. The key infrastructure comes from Sodot, which MoonPay acquired in April 2026. Sodot's infrastructure has secured more than $50 billion in transactions across over 10 million wallets.
x402 standard and chain support
Originally developed by Coinbase, x402 is now governed by the Linux Foundation and backed by more than 20 organizations, including AWS, Cloudflare, Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, Shopify, and Anthropic.PayBox integrates with x402, an open payment protocol originally developed by Coinbase that enables AI agents to make internet-native payments. The protocol was contributed to the Linux Foundation in April 2026 and is now managed as an open, vendor-neutral industry standard.
PayBox launches with support for Solana and EVM-compatible chains including Ethereum, Hyperliquid, Tempo, Base, Robinhood Chain, Arbitrum, and Polygon, with more coming.Current integrations include restaurant reservations through AgentRes.dev, shopping through Purch.xyz, and flight bookings through BRIJ.fi.
MoonPay positions PayBox as an open alternative to AI payment offerings from Robinhood, Coinbase, and Visa. Built on the x402 open protocol, the wallet does not depend on MoonPay's authorization or prioritize specific merchants, allowing interoperability across online services and decentralized applications.
