Musk has separately hinted that he plans to place an actual physical Dogecoin on the lunar surface, possibly in 2027.
But the Sep. 14 launch is the immediate catalyst, and it arrives with DOGE trading almost at $0.084, down about 88% from its all-time high of $0.74 in May 2021, according to Decibel.
The pattern is consistent enough to be worth paying attention to.
In April 2019, Musk posted that Dogecoin "might be my fav cryptocurrency." The meme coin's price rallied from $0.0025 to $0.0040 within days.
Musk's SNL appearance in May 2021 is the cautionary tale. While Dogecoin peaked at $0.7316 around the show's broadcast when Musk called it "a hustle," the meme coin has never returned to that level.
In November 2024, Musk's appointment to lead the Department of Government Efficiency, which shares the DOGE acronym, sent the coin from $0.20 to $0.48 within days.
