Star Xu, founder of the cryptocurrency exchange OKX, stated that Bitcoin and the cryptocurrency market have entered a period significantly different from past cycles, and that blockchain technology could fundamentally change the global financial system in the next decade.

In a program he participated in, Xu, evaluating the development of the cryptocurrency sector over the last 15 years, reminded that Bitcoin has overcome many major crises since 2011. He stated that the sector has faced serious challenges repeatedly, from technical problems on the Bitcoin network to the collapse of Mt. Gox, from forks like Bitcoin Cash and Bitcoin SV to the FTX bankruptcy, and argued that after each crisis, the sector has become bigger and stronger.

According to Xu, Bitcoin and blockchain can no longer be considered merely speculative investment tools. The OKX founder stated that individual custody, peer-to-peer transfers, transparent blockchain infrastructure, Ethereum smart contracts, stablecoins, and tokenized financial assets are increasingly forming a larger financial ecosystem. Xu believes that blockchain will become a significant part of the world’s financial infrastructure in the coming years.

“The changes in the next decade could be far greater than those in the past decade.”

Xu painted a rather optimistic picture, especially for the next decade. Highlighting Bitcoin’s rise over the past 15 years, the OKX founder stated that new use cases like stablecoins and tokenized shares will accelerate the adoption of blockchain technology.

Xu argued that younger generations will prefer 24/7, global, fast, and low-cost financial services, stating that the traditional financial system has lagged behind the transformation in communication and internet technologies. He added that blockchain and stablecoins offer significant advantages, particularly in global payment and settlement systems.

Xu also stated that the transformation in the crypto and blockchain sector in the new era beginning in 2026 could be far greater than that of the previous decade. According to Xu, tokenized shares, stablecoins, and on-chain financial products will form the core components of the next generation’s financial system.

“Cryptocurrency Exchanges Will Not Be Just Trading Platforms”

OKX founder believes that centralized cryptocurrency exchanges will also transform. According to Xu, in the future these platforms will no longer be just exchanges for buying and selling Bitcoin or altcoins; they will become comprehensive financial services platforms providing money storage, payments, investment, and access to global financial assets.

Xu stated that blockchain technology could make it easier for companies to reach global investors with their assets, and that decentralized finance and decentralized exchanges would also play a significant role in this transformation. He argued that models such as using tokenized shares as collateral and obtaining loans via blockchain could make many processes of traditional finance more transparent.

Xu also believes that with the development of on-chain transaction infrastructures, even matching engines and clearing processes could be moved to the blockchain. He stated that in such a system, regulators could track transactions in real-time via the blockchain instead of requesting periodic reports from financial institutions.

Xu noted that many investors in the crypto market focus on short-term price movements, while highlighting the long-term transformation of the sector. According to the OKX founder, having a long-term perspective is critical to navigating different market cycles and benefiting from growth in the blockchain sector.

Xu believes that regulation will also play a significant role in the future of the sector. He specifically points out that regulatory frameworks in Europe could enable crypto companies to operate under standards similar to traditional financial institutions, arguing that protecting customer assets, transparent verification of reserves, and independent auditing are fundamental requirements for the sector.

“Crypto Could Become the Daily Infrastructure of Billions of People”

At the end of the interview, the OKX founder reiterated his optimism for the coming years. According to Xu, a completely new financial system could emerge from the combination of stablecoins, tokenized shares, licensed centralized exchanges, and decentralized trading platforms.

Xu predicts that within a few years, people will be able to manage their money in digital wallets, make payments via blockchain, and directly access numerous assets, including tokenized stocks. He also stated that with the development of individual custody technologies, investment strategies could be run directly on users’ own wallets without the need to entrust their assets to third parties.
