TLDR:

  • The PayPal stablecoin strategy is moving deeper into global payments as PYUSD reaches about 70 markets and gains more blockchain access.
  • Q2 revenue rose to $8.68 billion, beating the $8.47 billion estimate, while adjusted earnings reached $1.38 per share for the quarter.
  • PayPal excluded an $81 million loss tied to strategic investments and crypto assets from non-GAAP performance calculations.
  • Kraken placed PYUSD on Stellar within its network expansion roadmap, but the exchange has not confirmed immediate network support.

The PayPal stablecoin strategy gained attention after the company reported stronger second-quarter revenue and a significant investment-related adjustment. Revenue reached $8.68 billion, above the $8.47 billion analyst estimate. GAAP earnings were $1.26 per share, while adjusted earnings reached $1.38 per share.

PayPal excluded an $81 million loss tied to strategic investments and crypto assets from its non-GAAP results. Management also placed PYUSD, agentic payments, digital identity, and biometric authentication among its growth priorities.

Meanwhile, Kraken added PYUSD on Stellar to its network expansion roadmap. That step could widen exchange access, although Kraken has not confirmed immediate trading support for the network.

PayPal Stablecoin Strategy Separates Crypto From Operations

PayPal’s revenue increased from $8.29 billion a year earlier, supported by payment activity across its platform. Total payment volume reached $486.4 billion, rising 9% on a currency-neutral basis. Adjusted earnings of $1.38 per share exceeded the $1.28 market estimate. GAAP earnings of $1.26 included items excluded from adjusted calculations.

The $81 million figure covered losses from strategic investments and crypto assets held for investment. PayPal does not actively trade those holdings or use them to finance daily operations. Therefore, management excluded the change from non-GAAP earnings to separate market swings from payment performance. The accounting treatment does not erase the loss from GAAP results. It shows how asset valuations affected profit.

PayPal’s stablecoin strategy now sits beside efforts to improve branded checkout, Venmo, and merchant services. Management sees digital dollars as another settlement option within its payment network. That approach differs from treating crypto holdings as treasury assets or trading positions. PayPal can expand blockchain payments while limiting their influence on adjusted operating measures.

The company also increased its full-year adjusted earnings outlook to about $5.38 per share. Transaction margin dollars reached $3.9 billion, although the adjusted operating margin narrowed from the previous year. Higher volume supported revenue while profitability faced pressure from business mix and investment spending.

The PayPal stablecoin strategy could benefit from the company’s scale across consumers and merchants. However, adoption still depends on local availability, wallet use, exchange support, and regulatory rules. Those factors will determine whether PYUSD becomes a payment instrument or stays within crypto transfers.

PYUSD Expansion Adds Markets and Kraken Network Access

Meanwhile, PYUSD expansion gives PayPal a route into cross-border transfers, merchant settlement, and blockchain commerce. The stablecoin is redeemable one-to-one for dollars and backed by deposits, Treasuries, and similar cash equivalents. Paxos issues the token, while PayPal distributes it through eligible accounts and blockchain networks.

PayPal opened PYUSD access across about 70 markets after initially serving the United States and the United Kingdom. Eligible customers can hold, send, receive, and transfer the token to external wallets. PayPal also offers rewards for qualifying balances, although terms vary by market. The rollout broadens digital-dollar access without requiring a separate consumer application.

Kraken’s roadmap adds another infrastructure channel for PYUSD expansion. The exchange lists Stellar under planned network expansions for PYUSD. Kraken says roadmap inclusion does not guarantee immediate funding or trading support. Users must wait for an official announcement before depositing through that network. Kraken already supports PYUSD through Ethereum and Solana in eligible regions.

The PayPal stablecoin strategy also connects with agentic payments, allowing approved software agents to transact securely within user-defined permissions. The model could support automated purchases, subscriptions, supplier payments, and other commerce tasks. PayPal plans to combine these tools with digital identity and biometric authentication. Those safeguards may confirm users, devices, and delegated payment instructions.

PayPal World provides another distribution layer by connecting PayPal and Venmo with international payment partners. The company can introduce PYUSD where local rules and product approvals permit. PayPal stablecoin strategy therefore links digital dollars with established accounts, merchant relationships, identity systems, and automated commerce tools.
