Record Outflow Points to Tightening Supply

Some 4.54 trillion $PEPE tokens left centralised exchanges in a single day on 5 August 2026, marking @pepecoineth's largest net outflow since November 2024, according to Santiment data. When coins move off trading platforms in bulk, less supply sits ready to be sold at market. Bulls typically read that shift as tokens moving into stronger, longer-term hands rather than sitting in wallets primed for quick exits.

The move stands out because $PEPE has largely traded sideways for the past two months with no material project catalyst to drive direction. Despite that, the token is still up around 6% on the week, carrying a market cap of roughly $1.18 billion. PEPE has spent much of 2026 behaving like a high-beta sentiment asset, bouncing with shifts in meme-coin appetite and exchange flows rather than any underlying fundamental change.

ETF Decision Adds a Longer-Term Catalyst

Beyond the outflow data, there is a regulatory wildcard on the horizon. On 8 April 2026, Canary Capital filed an S-1 with the SEC for the first spot PEPE ETF, the first regulated exchange-traded vehicle ever attempted for a pure meme coin with no underlying utility narrative. The proposed fund, called the Canary PEPE ETF, would track the live price of PEPE, with all holdings held by a custodian, and the filing notes the trust may hold up to 5% of its assets in Ethereum to cover transaction fees.

The SEC has up to 240 days from the filing date to make a decision, pointing to an October to November 2026 timeline. Approval would create regulated institutional access to PEPE exposure, mirroring the DOGE ETF approvals from earlier in the year. Estimates suggest the review process could take up to 240 days, making approval uncertain and potentially delaying any bullish price discovery until late 2026 or beyond. The SEC has yet to set a decision timeline, and approval odds remain low given the regulatory scrutiny applied to meme assets.

For now, $PEPE remains a momentum-driven asset with no project roadmap to lean on. The exchange outflow data gives bulls a near-term talking point, but a sustained move is likely to depend on broader crypto sentiment and, ultimately, what the SEC decides to do with the Canary Capital application before the year is out.
