Lock Your Pi or Keep It Free to Move?

Lock it and mine faster, or keep it free to move? Every Pioneer ends up facing that choice, and the Pi Network Lockup Mechanism is what sits behind it.

The feature lets Pioneers commit part of their Pi for a fixed period and earn a higher mining rate in return. On paper, that’s easy. The rules around timing, KYC, and early release take more care.

Below, you’ll see how lockups work, how they behave before and afterMainnet migration, and which risks deserve a second look. The details reflect information available in October 2026.

What Is the Pi-Network Lockup Mechanism?

The Pi Network Lockup Mechanism is a voluntary system. A Pioneer locks a share of their for a chosen time and gets a mining boost in return.

The Core Team says the idea is to stop all migrated Pi-from hitting the market at once. It also says the reward design traces back to the project’swhite paper.

Locked still belongs to the Pioneer. It just can’t move. That also keeps part of thecirculating supply off the market for a while.

How Does the Pi-Network Lockup-Mechanism Work?

A pioneer picks two things: how much to lock and for how long. The app then shows an estimated boost to the mining rate before anything is confirmed.

That boost raises the rate earned throughmobile mining. Reports say it only applies to sessions where the Pioneer is active, so a locked balance alone earns no bonus.

How Do Lockup-Duration and Percentage Affect Rewards?

Setting

Options reported

Effect on rewards

Percentage

25%, 50%, 90%, 100%

A larger share gives a bigger boost.

Duration

2 weeks, 6 months, 1 year, 3 years

A longer lock gives a bigger boost.

More locked for longer means a stronger boost. The Core Team has advertised boosts of up to 200%, depending on both settings.

No single public table fixes the exact multiplier, so rely on the estimate shown in the app.

What Is the Difference Between Pre and Post-Migration Lockups?

Lockup-Type

Pre-migration

Post-migration

Where you set it

Pi app, mainnet checklist

Pi Wallet, Lockups section

Pi it covers

Mined Pi not yet moved

Pi is already on the mainnet.

When it applies

At your next migration

Once you create it

The two don’t affect each other. A lockup-made on Mainnet doesn’t change the settings you saved before migrating.

Pre-migration, has to clearKYC verification before it can move to Mainnet. The lock period then applies.

Post-migration lockups were added in July 2024 for Pi-that had already arrived on Mainnet.

How Can Pioneers Set Up a Pi-Network Lockup?

Before migration:

  1. Open the Pi-app and go to the Mainnet checklist.

  2. Find the lockup settings.

  3. Choose a percentage and a duration.

  4. Check the estimated rewards and confirm.

After migration:

  1. Open the Pi-Wallet in the Pi-Browser.

  2. Go to Lockups and choose Create New Lockup.

  3. Pick an amount and a duration.

  4. Check the estimated boost and confirm.

Settings saved before migration are applied during themigration process. Menu names can change with app updates, so follow what the app shows.

Can Pioneers Unlock Pi-Before the Lockup Ends?

No. Once a lockup is committed, it stays binding until the chosen period ends, according to the project’s guidance. It can’t be reversed.

Pioneers who haven’t migrated can still change settings for future moves. Pi-that’s already locked stays locked. So the locked amount is best treated as unavailable.

What Are the Benefits and Limits of Pi-Lockup Rewards?

The stronger signal is the incentive. A lockup can raise mining income and may reduce near-term selling pressure, which is the project’s stated goal.

The limits matter just as much:

  • Locked Pi-can’t be traded or spent.

  • Rewards depend on active mining.

  • Pi-comes back into supply when a lockup-ends.

Lockups also don’t change Pi’s overallsupply and distribution, only how fast it reaches the market.

The Core Team’sofficial blog lists the maximum supply as 100 billion Pi, with 65% set aside for community mining rewards.

What Risks Should Pioneers Check Before Locking Pi?

  • No early exit: a locked amount can’t be recovered before the end date.

  • Unlock waves: many lockups ending around the same time could add selling pressure. That’s an interpretation, not a confirmed outcome.

  • Rule changes: boosts and menus can change with updates.

  • Outside offers: lockups run only through the official app, so offers from elsewhere aren’t tied to the Core Team.

A lockup has no say in market price. Any Pi Coin price prediction is only an estimate, and estimates can miss by a wide margin.

Conclusion:

The Pi Network Lockup Mechanism trades liquidity for a higher mining rate. The pre-migration and post-migration versions work separately, and neither can be undone early.

What remains unclear is how supply will behave when large lockups expire, so keep following updates on Pi Coin.

Before locking anything, confirm the current terms inside the app and on theofficial Pi website.
