Pi Network (@PiCoreTeam) is exploring how stablecoins could expand utility across its ecosystem, according to the project's latest update. The Pi Core Team says the work includes a partnership with Open Standard, the company behind the OUSD stablecoin.

"Stablecoins can also provide additional connectivity channels for the network, creating more ways for participants to be onboarded into the Pi ecosystem," Pi Network noted.

Why stablecoins, and why now

The project says stablecoins may help businesses with predictable pricing, payments and settlement. Price swings in crypto assets make it hard for merchants to price goods and keep accounts, and Crypto Economy reported that the initiative is aimed at giving merchants on the network more predictable settlement. The same report said the native PI asset would keep its core function and that stablecoins are meant to complement it, not replace it.

Pi will work with Open Standard to explore rewards for Pioneers, as Pi Network's users are known, and wider ecosystem utility. Open Standard says OUSD is a partner-governed stablecoin. According to CryptoPotato, Open Standard now says its network includes more than 200 financial institutions, fintechs, banks and global businesses. The outlet also reported that OUSD is issued by Stripe's Bridge, with reserves held at BlackRock, Lead Bank and BNY Mellon, and that it is natively available on Ethereum, Solana, Base and Tempo.

What is still unclear

No specific integration timeline has been announced. CryptoPotato noted that Pi has not explained how any Pioneer reward program would work, who would qualify or when it might launch. It also said Pi has not confirmed that OUSD will be natively supported on its own blockchain, so the partnership announcement alone should not be read as confirming such an integration.

The user base is a possible draw. Crypto Economy cited more than 17 million KYC-verified users for Pi Network, which it described as a considerable base for scaling stablecoin adoption if a rewards model works.

Markets have not reacted strongly. FXStreet reported that PI was holding above $0.0800 on Wednesday after a roughly 2% rebound the previous day, with the technical outlook still bearish.
