Flat Fee Era Ends August 24

Pi Network (@PiCoreTeam) is overhauling how creators are charged to build and edit applications inside Pi App Studio, with the changes taking effect on August 24, 2026.

Under the current model, creators paid 0.25 $PI to create an app and another 0.25 $PI for edits, while Pi Network absorbed much of the actual AI service cost. The team says that arrangement is no longer sustainable. From August 24, standard pricing will more closely reflect the underlying AI resources required, and prices can therefore vary depending on an application's complexity, with no additional markup from Pi Network.

Subsidies Tied to Real Usage

The update does not remove subsidies entirely, but it does make them conditional. Creators whose applications demonstrate meaningful usage by distinct users can continue receiving the subsidized rate. Apps that exist mainly for testing or experimentation, however, are likely to face higher costs under the new structure.

Pi Network says universal subsidies had encouraged experimentation and helped it understand App Studio usage, but continuing to fund applications that never develop an audience could waste resources.

The August 24 change will essentially make it mandatory for creators to build an app that Pioneers actually use, so the Core Team can continue subsidizing development costs. The network has also signalled flexibility going forward: missing the initial subsidy qualification does not permanently exclude a creator, as future reviews can change eligibility as applications gain genuine users.

The pricing update is part of a broader push to raise the quality of the Pi ecosystem. Pi Network's 2026 roadmap remains focused on app utility, KYC, migrations, node infrastructure, smart contracts, and ecosystem growth. The team says pricing will continue to evolve as more data from the platform becomes available.
