Pixelmon Crypto Game Shutdown: Why Development Ends After Final Test?

Pixelmon Game has pulled the plug on its gaming operation. The NFT project confirmed on its official Discord that a three week test run by outside publishers did not deliver strong enough results to secure a long term commercial deal, and management has now decided to stop all game development for good.

The move ends more than two years of repeated testing cycles and comes with layoffs across the studio's gaming team.

The bigger question for holders and the wider Web3 gaming community is what this means for a project that once raised close to $70 million through one of the NFT market most talked-about mints, and later pulled in $8 million more in venture funding to keep building.

Why Did Pixelmon game Stop Developing Its Game?

According to the Discord announcement, external publishers spent their own marketing budgets running player acquisition and retention campaigns on Pixelmon crypto shutdown titles over three weeks.

The games were not rejected outright, but the numbers weren't compelling enough for a longer partnership. Publishers suggested another round of polishing and a follow-up test, but Pixelmon leadership passed.

The team said it had been stuck in a "not too bad but not good enough" spot for more than two years, and had already agreed internally that this exercise would be the final call.

Layoffs and What Happens to the Games

Game team members received notice last Friday, along with severance and other benefits based on their local jurisdictions.

Staff will move into garden leave while the existing games are taken offline and their backend systems dismantled. A smaller group of senior and cross-functional staff will stay on to look at what comes next.

From a $70M NFT Mint to a Stalled Game

Pixelmon crypto game story goes back to February 2022, when its Dutch auction NFT mint brought in roughly $70 million, with some buyers paying as much as 3 Ethereum (ETH) per piece.

The reveal that followed drew heavy backlash after the final artwork looked far rougher than the promotional renders, prompting founder Syber to publicly admit the reveal was mishandled.

By late 2022, Web3 studio LiquidX had taken a 60% stake, installing Giulio Xiloyannis as CEO to rebuild the project around upgraded 3D art, even as the mocked low-poly character "Kevin" became an unlikely fan favorite.

In February 2024, the project closed an $8 million seed round backed by Animoca Brands, Delphi Ventures, Foresight Ventures, Amber Group, Bing Ventures, Bitscale Capital, and Cypher Capital, meant to fund a portfolio that included PixelPals, Hunting Grounds, Arena, and Kevin the Adventurer. Community testing on titles like Warriors of Nova Thera followed in August 2024, but none of it produced a finished, commercially viable game.

No Refunds, but a Possible Pivot

A refund to the community isn't on the table, pointing to its shareholder structure and existing obligations tied to acquiring the project's IP.

Remaining, non-escrowed funds will instead go toward finding a workable business model outside of gaming, drawing on past experiments like Launchpool, CollectShiny, and Lexium.

The team plans to share more on that direction, along with its interest in AI tools, at a town hall this Thursday. If no viable model emerges, Pixelmon has said the company could ultimately close.

Conclusion

After more than four years of delays, a leadership change, an art overhaul, and one final failed publisher test, gaming ambitions have come to an end.

The project isn't shutting its doors outright, but its future now hinges on finding a business that has nothing to do with the game it spent tens of millions of dollars trying to build
