Private deployment of security patches
Polygon reported that the security flaws were identified and then resolved by implementing fixes inside the Austin and Kyoto upgrades. Both hard forks were privately tested and activated on the mainnet prior to any disclosure of their existence or the specific vulnerabilities.
The decision to conduct these updates discreetly was intended to prevent any potential attackers from attempting to exploit the vulnerabilities before the network was secured.

Details of the addressed vulnerabilities
The most severe vulnerability involved the Heimdall layer of the Polygon network. According to Polygon, specially crafted transactions could have forced validators to perform excessive computation, potentially resulting in a network disruption.
The Austin hard fork further resolved two separate denial-of-service (DoS) vulnerabilities in the Bor component of the protocol. These risks could have slowed down block processing or even caused network nodes to crash.
Polygon stated that both Heimdall and Bor were reinforced by these updates, strengthening the network against potential attacks and enhancing overall system stability. The hard fork deployments remained under wraps until Polygon engineers verified their effectiveness and confirmed network safety.
Polygon emphasized that all vulnerabilities were addressed before public disclosure and that no exploit occurred on mainnet, highlighting the team’s commitment to securing the network through silent, preemptive action.
During the period of these network upgrades, Polygon’s native token POL, previously known as MATIC, traded near $0.10. Data from CoinGecko indicates that the token decreased 4% over the past week but remained up 44% for the past month and registered a 2.3% gain year to date.
