The past month has seen an intriguing development in the issuance and burning of Ripple‘s dollar-backed stablecoin, RLUSD, on the XRP Ledger. Recent data reveals a notably unusual monthly activity pattern, highlighted by a substantial token burn worth $35.7 million. This period also witnessed an issuance of RLUSD amounting to $449.3 million, creating an almost balanced scenario.
What Drives the 99% Burn Rate?
A robust number of redemption transactions from institutional clients spurred a massive burn of RLUSD, reaching $448.9 million within the same timeframe. Consequently, the discrepancy between issuance and burn on the XRP Ledger nearly vanished, resulting in an impressive 99% burn rate for the month.
This indicates that the net supply increase on XRPL was nearly negligible. The figures further highlight a noticeable divergence in cross-chain usage patterns within the ecosystem.
In the last 30 days, $449.3 million RLUSD was issued on the XRP Ledger while $448.9 million was burned, nearly eliminating the net supply increase.
How Does Ethereum Usage Differ?
Ripple, renowned for developing cross-border payment and digital asset infrastructures, demonstrated that despite maintaining similar scales of liquidity on two networks, their utilization varied.
Capital typically flows into the XRP Ledger for prompt transfers and immediate corporate settlement processes. Here, tokens are issued and promptly burned once converted into fiat currency. Conversely, a more permanent accumulation of liquidity marks the Ethereum network.
In the same time span, Ethereum witnessed the issuance of $403 million RLUSD, accompanied by a burn of $177.3 million. Thus, this network maintained a net inflow exceeding $225 million, emphasizing a different growth trajectory compared to its counterpart.
- Total circulating RLUSD supply stands at $1.757 billion.
- Liquidity distribution is nearly equal across both networks.
- XRP Ledger holds $883 million, accounting for 50.2% of the total supply.
- Ethereum retains $874 million, representing 49.8% of the supply.
The recent $35.7 million burn reflects not a weakening in demand but distinct usage models across two networks. Whereas XRP Ledger functions predominantly as a rapid transition and reimbursement channel, the Ethereum network sees tokens retained for extended periods within its ecosystem. This showcases the adaptability and strategic use of RLUSD in varying financial operations.
