No misconception has caused more confusion in the XRP community than the belief that RLUSD was created to compete with XRP.

Crypto researcher SMQKE tackled it directly in a recent video breakdown on X, walking through the mechanics, the data, and the institutional context behind both assets.

The core argument is simple. RLUSD holds value. XRP moves it.

Two Assets, Two Jobs

SMQKE referenced Ripple’s own RLUSD documentation, which addresses the question explicitly. XRP is the native asset of the XRP Ledger, built to bridge between currencies. RLUSD is a regulated digital dollar, backed one-for-one by real dollar reserves.

Ripple’s president, Monica Long, stated before RLUSD launched that its integration is “both additive and complementary to XRP.” That statement matters. Complementary means the two assets expand each other’s utility, not that one displaces the other.

The Scale Stablecoins Are Operating At

Stablecoins have become a major part of the financial market. Data from the Bank for International Settlements shows that three leading dollar-backed stablecoins recorded more than 141 million transactions in 2025.

Their combined on-chain transfer volume reached $46 trillion over the year, almost three times Visa’s payment volume. RLUSD itself grew from zero to $1 billion in under 11 months.

That volume has a direct relationship with XRP. Before any account can hold RLUSD on the XRP Ledger, it must hold XRP in reserve.

Every RLUSD payment burns a small amount of XRP as a fee. When a dollar needs to convert into another currency, the ledger can route it through XRP. SMQKE put it plainly: “XRP used at every step.”

Why RLUSD Also Exists on Ethereum

SMQKE addressed the Ethereum question with a strategic explanation. Ethereum had years of stablecoin liquidity before RLUSD launched, so that is where large pools of enterprise capital already sat. Ripple issued RLUSD on Ethereum to access that liquidity and funnel new users toward the XRP ecosystem.

The XRP Ledger settles in three to four seconds for under a tenth of a cent. Its built-in automated market maker outperforms traditional Ethereum-based equivalents on speed, scalability, and efficiency. SMQKE noted that liquidity migrates toward more efficient networks, and RLUSD’s expansion is accelerating that process.

Institutional Backing Behind Both Assets

The institutional infrastructure reinforces the relationship. BNY, which holds $63.4 trillion in assets under custody and administration, holds RLUSD’s reserves and added support for XRP and RLUSD side by side in October 2026.

Moody’s assigned RLUSD an investment-grade rating, the first for any stablecoin according to Ripple. Ripple Prime lets trading firms use RLUSD as collateral while trading XRP.

SMQKE closed with the structural logic: “Stablecoins create the traffic. The traffic creates the need for the bridge.”
