Patrick Lowry, CEO of Samara Asset Group, has publicly criticized the concept of companies holding Bitcoin exclusively as a treasury reserve. Lowry stated that he strongly dislikes the term “Bitcoin treasury company,” emphasizing that the market has shown limited support for firms pursuing such a narrow focus, with the exception of Strategy.

Concerns over “digital gold” narrative

Lowry described the popular branding of Bitcoin as “digital gold” as misguided marketing. He claimed that this narrative has shifted the perception of Bitcoin from a medium of exchange to a speculative investment vehicle. According to Lowry, this framing is a primary reason Bitcoin prices tend to decline whenever the Federal Reserve signals the possibility of higher interest rates.

The framing of Bitcoin as “digital gold” made it seem more like an investment than a form of money, which is why its value reacts negatively to central bank policy updates.

He suggested that by emphasizing investment attributes rather than functional utility, the industry may have inadvertently encouraged volatility in Bitcoin’s price, especially during periods of monetary tightening.

Samara’s approach to Bitcoin

Samara Asset Group, a global investment firm, holds Bitcoin primarily as working capital rather than as a static treasury asset. Lowry explained that the company allocates venture fund commitments to Bitcoin and liquidates these holdings to meet capital calls, regardless of prevailing market prices. This approach, he argued, integrates Bitcoin into the operational workflow instead of treating it solely as a long-term reserve.

He further noted that Samara manages over 20 venture funds with this strategy, using Bitcoin’s liquidity for flexible fund management while maintaining exposure to digital assets.

Mini dictionary: Capital call, a request from an investment fund for investors to provide additional funds, which are then used to finance investments or expenses as planned by the fund manager.

Risks for shareholders and regulatory developments

Lowry warned that the model of holding Bitcoin passively as a treasury reserve could be detrimental to shareholders. He pointed to the hurdle rate problem, where the return threshold required to justify holding Bitcoin as a non-operating asset may not always align with shareholder interests.

Holding Bitcoin as an inactive treasury asset can inadvertently harm shareholder value, especially when market conditions fail to deliver the returns needed to clear the investment’s hurdle rate.

Lowry also referenced recent decisions by MSCI, a leading provider of global equity indexes, regarding non-operating company definitions and regulatory loopholes such as the 1940 Act in the United States. He raised concerns about potential backlash if more companies chose to hold major cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum, or XRP as treasury assets.

Additionally, Lowry commented on increased regulatory scrutiny throughout Europe, noting that efforts to foster cryptocurrency exchange-traded products and innovation have, in some instances, met with overregulation after changes in political leadership.

Addressing macroeconomic risks, Lowry discussed the potential implications of rising sovereign bond yields for Bitcoin. He stated that Bitcoin’s price often reacts negatively to discussions of monetary policy tightening, as higher yields and expectations of rate hikes can drive risk-averse behavior among institutional investors.
