Sberbank has begun testing cryptocurrency operations in its Sberbank Online mobile app, including the ability to buy, sell, deposit and withdraw digital assets. The pilot, reported on October 8, follows the Bank of Russia’s admission of the lender as a digital depository under the country’s new digital-currency market framework two days earlier.

The move places a limited crypto test inside the digital services of Russia’s largest bank, rather than in a standalone exchange product. Sberbank has said broader customer access is planned from December 1, but only if the relevant regulatory framework takes effect.

Sberbank Online pilot covers trading and crypto transfers

According to Vedomosti, Sberbank said on October 8 that it had started testing cryptocurrency operations in Sberbank Online. The functions named by the bank cover purchases and sales as well as deposits and withdrawals, providing both trading and asset-transfer capabilities within the test.

That description is more specific than a general plan to provide exposure to cryptoassets. It indicates that the pilot is intended to handle operations involving the assets themselves, although the reported announcement does not set out the pilot’s customer scope, transaction limits or the full operational terms.

For now, the service remains a test. The stated December timetable is for broader access, not an indication that the app’s crypto functions are already generally available across Sberbank’s customer base.

Bitcoin, Ether and USDT are the initial supported assets

Bitcoin, Ether and Tether’s USDT stablecoin are among the initial lineup, which also includes other popular cryptoassets, according to RBC Crypto. By market recognition, BTC and ETH are the two largest cryptocurrencies; USDT is a dollar-linked stablecoin issued by Tether.

The three named assets indicate that the offering is not confined to a single token or to cryptoassets of one type. The information reported by RBC Crypto does not, however, include a complete list of the additional assets covered by the pilot.

Including deposits and withdrawals alongside buying and selling is also notable because those functions address different parts of the user experience. The announcement does not specify which networks, transfer methods or other technical arrangements will be used, so those details remain outside the reported scope of the test.

Bank of Russia admission created the regulatory route for Sberbank

On October 6, the Bank of Russia said five digital depositories and four cryptocurrency-exchange organisations had been admitted to the financial market under Russia’s new digital-currency framework.

Sberbank’s profile with the regulator records its digital-depository status from the same date. The timing places its cryptocurrency-app pilot alongside the newly opened regulatory route, while admission as a digital depository and an app-based retail service remain distinct elements of the developing regime.

The announcement identifies Sberbank as one of several entities admitted under the framework, rather than the sole organisation entering the market.

December 1 wider rollout depends on the regulatory framework

Sberbank plans to make the service available to a broader set of customers from December 1, 2026, subject to the relevant regulatory framework taking effect, according to Kommersant. That condition makes the date a planned milestone rather than an unconditional launch commitment.

The planned functionality is also expected to extend beyond the main banking app to SberInvestments and SberBusiness. Those additions would bring the proposed crypto functions into Sberbank services aimed at investment users and business customers, respectively, but the report does not provide separate rollout dates for either platform.

December 1 is therefore the next date to watch: it is when Sberbank has said access could broaden, provided the regulatory condition cited by the bank has been met.
