The @SECGov has approved a rule change that clears the way for the first-ever triple-leveraged $BTC and $ETH exchange-traded funds in US history, marking a significant expansion of high-risk crypto investment products available on American exchanges.

What the SEC Approved

On October 2, 2026, the SEC approved a rule change that clears six 3x leveraged exchange-traded products for listing and trading, including funds tied to Bitcoin and Ether. The lineup also covers gold, silver, crude oil, and natural gas, with the approval issued under Release No. 34-106577 and covering six products structured as series of the Volatility Shares (VS) Trust.

This is a major milestone because, until now, crypto funds in the US had been capped at 2x leverage. The Bitcoin product is expected to trade under the ticker BITH, while the Ether product is listed in the registration statement as ETHK.

None of the six approved funds will physically hold Bitcoin, Ether, precious metal bars, or barrels of oil. Instead, the products will use regulated futures contracts, with the Bitcoin and Ether ETPs tracking CME Group futures prices.Despite the "ETF" label in their names, the products are legally distinct from conventional exchange-traded funds. They are exchange-traded products, or ETPs, that invest in commodity-linked assets and are not subject to the Investment Company Act of 1940, which applies to traditional ETFs.

Trading Has Not Yet Begun

Approval of the listing rule is not the same thing as a launch. Trading cannot start until a separate Form S-1 registration statement under the Securities Act of 1933 becomes effective, and the approval did not disclose any timeline for that.

All six products reset their leverage every day, which is the single most important detail for anyone thinking about buying one.Analysts warn that daily reset and leverage structures can cause volatility decay, amplified trading flows, and make the ETFs highly speculative and risky for all but short-term traders.

Cboe BZX Exchange filed the proposed rule change on August 10, 2026, and the SEC published notice of it on August 14.
