A Remarkable Throughput Milestone
@SeiNetwork has crossed 2.63 billion total transactions since its mainnet launch in mid-2023, a figure that puts the scalability-focused EVM blockchain in rare company across the entire crypto industry. To put that number in perspective, @Ethereum mainnet has processed roughly 3.75 billion transactions over more than 11 years of operation. Sei has come close to matching that figure in under three years.
The comparison is striking not because it diminishes Ethereum's standing as the dominant smart contract platform, but because it illustrates just how aggressively Sei has been built for throughput. Sei is a high-performance Layer 1 blockchain designed to achieve the speed and efficiency of centralized systems without sacrificing decentralization. Its architecture uses a parallel execution engine that allows multiple independent transactions to be processed simultaneously, supporting a theoretical maximum of 12,500 transactions per second on its current mainnet, with finality in under 400 milliseconds.
What Comes Next for Sei
The 2.63 billion transaction milestone arrives as Sei pushes toward an even more ambitious phase of its development. The Giga upgrade is Sei Network's major 2026 technical milestone, targeting over 200,000 transactions per second and sub-400 millisecond finality through a new Autobahn consensus mechanism and asynchronous parallel execution. The storage and execution engines are already live following the v6.6 mainnet upgrade in August 2026.
Sei has also committed to completing its transition to an EVM-only chain, deprecating its original CosmWasm smart contracts and native Cosmos transaction types through community vote SIP-3. The move is designed to consolidate development focus and lower the barrier for Ethereum developers looking to build on a faster execution environment.
The Sei Development Foundation has reported significant ecosystem metrics, including 85 million new wallets and over $250 billion in stablecoin transactions. With $SEI's throughput numbers now approaching those of chains with a decade-long head start, the network's case as a serious contender in the Layer 1 landscape is becoming harder to dismiss.
