A South Korean court has acquitted Park, known online as “Coin King Jonbur Kim,” of all charges related to a cryptocurrency fraud scheme involving 340 billion won, or approximately $253 million.

Park, a high-profile cryptocurrency influencer in South Korea, was initially apprehended by authorities in December 2023 after attempting to leave the country on a fishing boat to avoid a financial investigation. He served several months in prison following the smuggling incident before facing further charges in February 2025.

Prosecutors accused Park of orchestrating large-scale market manipulation through digital tokens including Podo Coin and Artube. They alleged that he bribed executives at crypto exchanges, published misleading project updates, and artificially inflated token prices before selling them to individual investors. The prosecution sought a 20-year prison sentence, arguing that these activities resulted in significant investor losses.

However, on October 15, 2026, the Seoul Southern District Court determined that state prosecutors failed to provide compelling evidence directly linking Park to the fraudulent token issuance, exchange listings, or the price manipulation activities.

Judges stated that without concrete digital evidence tying Park’s personal devices or accounts to the back-end market manipulation software, the foundation for criminal charges could not be established.

Despite prosecutors’ efforts, there was no explicit proof that Park personally engineered the alleged fraudulent operations.

Mini dictionary: Podo Coin and Artube, relatively obscure digital tokens central to the case, were promoted in South Korea but currently have negligible market value after their association with the fraud investigation.

Public reactions and unresolved losses

Some market commentators and social media observers expressed surprise at the outcome and questioned where the legal process fell short. Commentator @RackhamRishel indicated that the high-profile acquittal has increased public interest in reviewing the detailed court documents to understand the gaps in the prosecution’s case.

Market analyst @LFGCAPO explained that the verdict hinged on the inability to provide direct digital forensics connecting Park to the manipulation, rather than any endorsement of the involved tokens themselves.

Independent reviewers noted that the court’s decision was a technical acquittal based solely on evidence, not a declaration that Podo Coin or Artube were legitimate investments.

Victims of the alleged scheme have not received any financial relief, as the court’s ruling did not address restitution. An online user, @LoidOx, highlighted that despite Park’s not guilty verdict, the judgment does nothing to assist investors who received no compensation for their losses.

Authorities previously confiscated several of Park’s luxury vehicles, such as a $4.3 million Ferrari. However, following his acquittal, legal experts believe it is unlikely that those assets will be used to reimburse defrauded investors.

Broader context: National security concerns

Amid the high-profile trial’s conclusion, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung announced that the nation’s financial sector has been hit by a cyberattack. Authorities have been ordered to deploy additional personnel and resources to mitigate the impact and protect critical infrastructure.
