Shinhan Asset Management, an affiliate of South Korea's Shinhan Financial Group, has secured a place on the Canton Network as a Super Validator, entering at weight 10 under a milestone program that spans node operations, tokenized securities, KRW settlement, and fund administration. The Canton Foundation (@CantonFdn) confirmed the appointment.

What the Role Involves

A Super Validator verifies blockchain transaction records to help keep the network running stably and takes part in key policy decisions, and can do so without directly holding digital assets. The role positions Shinhan Asset Management alongside firms such as Fireblocks and Ledger, which joined Canton in the same capacity.

The Canton Network, which counts HSBC and BNP Paribas among its members, aims to link financial systems while limiting how widely transaction information is disclosed.Governed by the Canton Foundation with participation from leading global financial institutions, Canton enables real-time, secure synchronization and settlement across multiple asset classes on a shared, interoperable infrastructure.

A Phased Entry Tied to Korean Regulation

The approval follows a memorandum of understanding Shinhan Asset Management signed with the Canton Foundation in June. The firm said it would focus on developing its own tokenization technology and conducting proof-of-concept work until South Korea establishes laws related to tokenized securities and guidance from financial authorities, after which it plans to begin activities on the Canton Network in stages within the permitted scope.

Shinhan's cautious, phased approach reflects a broader dynamic playing out across institutional finance. A group of major financial firms including DTCC has already executed the first cross-border intraday repo using tokenized assets on the Canton Network, demonstrating the platform's growing operational depth. For Shinhan, that full participation awaits regulatory clarity at home.
