Internet Computer (@dfinity) has launched ckSOL, its official token backed 1:1 by $SOL. The SOL sits in Solana addresses controlled by ICP's nodes, which sign together without any one holding the full key.
DeFi apps on ICP can now hold SOL next to $BTC, $ETH and $ICP. The launch completes Solana support, which first reached ICP developers in mid-2025.
How ckSOL works
ckSOL is the chain-key token representing SOL on the Internet Computer. According to the ICP developer documentation, it is backed 1:1 by SOL held in a canister-controlled Solana address, in the same way as ckETH. A minter canister monitors Solana deposits and mints ckSOL tokens that follow the ICRC-1 and ICRC-2 standards. To withdraw, a user burns ckSOL, and the system signs a Solana transfer using chain-key Ed25519 signatures.
The signing is spread across the network. The same documentation says each canister can have its own Solana wallet address, with signing performed collectively by subnet nodes without reconstructing the private key.
Governance approval came first. Solana Compass reported that the ckSOL minter, ledger and index were installed by a vote of the Network Nervous System, ICP's on-chain governance system, on 12 October 2026. It added that SOL deposited with the minter stays in the minter's Solana addresses until it is withdrawn, so activity is visible on Solana. For holders, the outlet described ckSOL as a route into ICP DeFi apps as they add support, with a canister acting as custodian instead of a bridge company.
Building on mid-2025 Solana support
ICP's Solana work began with reading and writing to the network. The Defiant published DFINITY's June 2025 announcement of the integration, which let ICP canister smart contracts interact with Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana. At that stage there was no SOL-backed token. A DFINITY engineer said on the developer forum in 2025 that there was no plan at the time for a ckSOL, so dapps would need to handle that themselves.
ckSOL follows the pattern of ckBTC and ckETH. DFINITY's code repository describes it as modeled after ckETH, and notes that the minter remains under active development and subject to change.
The practical effect is that SOL can now be used inside ICP applications without a separate bridge operator. Whether developers adopt it will depend on how quickly DeFi apps on ICP add ckSOL support.
