A video shared by crypto enthusiast Amelie on X shows a consumer using XRP to complete a payment in South Korea, providing a direct example of the cryptocurrency’s use in a retail transaction.

Amelie used the demonstration to support her claim that South Korea is “all-in” on XRP, as the video shows a payment interface that converts a Korean won amount into XRP before the user completes the transaction.

“South Korea is all-in on XRP – you can already pay with XRP there!” Amelie wrote in her post. She then added, “XRP South Korea.” The video captioned in the post shows a person preparing to pay with XRP through a digital payment interface.

The transaction begins with the user entering 4,700 Korean won. The interface then calculates the amount as 6.175 XRP, after which the user proceeds with the payment. The demonstration gives viewers a specific example of XRP functioning as a payment option in South Korea.

The Payment Demonstration

The transaction highlights how QR-based crypto payment infrastructure can connect XRP with merchants. Services such as Surfy have introduced XRP payment tests and integrations with selected merchants in South Korea, allowing users to make payments through QR-based systems.

However, the demonstration does not establish nationwide XRP acceptance. South Korean consumers still rely primarily on conventional payment methods and established digital payment platforms for everyday purchases. Regulatory requirements, cryptocurrency volatility, and merchant availability also limit the use of digital assets for routine retail transactions.

As a result, Amelie’s claim that South Korea is “all-in” on XRP goes beyond what the payment demonstration shows. The video confirms that a user can make an XRP payment through a supported system. But it does not show that major retailers, convenience stores, public transportation networks, or other nationwide services broadly accept XRP.

South Korea’s Wider XRP Market

South Korea nevertheless plays a significant role in the XRP market. Major domestic exchanges such as Upbit and Bithumb regularly record substantial XRP trading activity. Korean traders have also contributed significant liquidity to XRP markets, making the country an important market for the asset.

The institutional aspect also extends beyond retail payments. Ripple has pursued partnerships with South Korean financial institutions, including Jeonbuk Bank, to support cross-border payment and settlement infrastructure. These initiatives focus on financial institutions rather than everyday consumer purchases.

South Korea therefore combines strong XRP trading activity with emerging payment and institutional applications. Amelie’s video adds another example of a consumer completing a 4,700-won transaction with 6.175 XRP.

The demonstration confirms that XRP payment infrastructure exists in South Korea, while the broader claim of nationwide adoption requires more evidence. It nevertheless shows how payment providers can connect XRP with real-world transactions in the Korean market.
