SpaceX could generate up to $500 billion a year from artificial intelligence infrastructure after expanding AI compute capacity nearly sevenfold by the end of 2027, Elon Musk said.

Key Points:

  • Musk said SpaceX aims to increase AI compute capacity from 1.4 GW to 10 GW by the end of 2027.
  • He estimated that 10 GW could produce $300 billion to $500 billion in annual revenue.
  • SpaceX is combining terrestrial compute, chip manufacturing and planned AI satellites as it moves deeper into artificial intelligence.

SpaceX AI Revenue

Musk told employees on Aug. 11 that AI revenue could surpass all other SpaceX revenue as soon as September and widen that lead in the fourth quarter, Space.com reported. He said AI could represent 99% of SpaceX's value within five years.

SpaceX currently operates about 1.4 GW of AI compute sold to technology companies and AI labs, but Musk said the company wants 10 GW running by the end of 2027.

“The value per watt is probably going to be 30 to $50,” Musk said, putting potential annual revenue at $300 billion to $500 billion.

SpaceX has also acquired xAI, bringing the Grok chatbot and Colossus supercomputer cluster into the company, while a planned Texas complex called Terafab will produce advanced semiconductors with Tesla.

Musk AI Strategy

Musk said the longer-term plan extends AI infrastructure into orbit, where SpaceX wants to deploy as many as 1 million Starmind satellites using Starship. The company also envisions lunar factories that would build AI satellites and launch them from the moon with electromagnetic mass drivers.

The scale shows how central AI has become to SpaceX's growth assumptions. Before its public listing, the company identified a $28.5 trillion eventual total addressable market, including nearly $23 trillion tied to AI, according to Space.com.

Musk also framed the strategy around software, not only hardware, arguing that SpaceX should develop AI aligned with its broader space ambitions. “It's important that we have an AI that cares about humanity,” he said. He told employees that AI should help humanity expand to other planets and star systems.

The shift has accelerated throughout 2026, as SpaceX bought xAI, went public and expanded its Starmind plans around the proposed orbital AI network. Starship remains central to that plan.
