Starknet, originally developed as a technical solution to scale Ethereum, has presented a proposal to its community to transform into an independent blockchain. The StarkWare team has put forth a crucial decision on the Snapshot platform, asking users whether to transition from its current structure to an autonomous Layer 1 network.
Market Reactions Amplify Post-Vote Announcement
This strategic decision has triggered significant market activity. In early October, STRK surged by approximately 200% before experiencing a decline amid a broader crypto market pullback. However, on the official voting day, buying pressure resumed, causing the token‘s price to spike by 25% during the day.
The bulk of trading activity shifted towards the futures markets. The daily futures trading volume soared to $894.84 million, while spot market volume remained at $116.38 million. The unlocking of 127 million tokens owned by early investors also contributed to the market’s volatility.
The community vote initiated for Starknet explores the project’s potential transition from Ethereum to an independent Layer 1 network.
Focus on Quantum-Resilient Security
The plan is underpinned by a security rationale. Eli Ben-Sasson, a leading figure in the project, argues that advances in artificial intelligence are accelerating the arrival of quantum computers capable of breaking current encryption methods. Ben-Sasson, co-founder of StarkWare, is renowned for his work in zero-knowledge proofs.
Starknet believes it has the technical preparedness to implement a quantum-resistant security framework by 2027. However, its tight integration with Ethereum today poses a constraint on this timeline. With Ethereum’s broader security updates potentially extending to the end of 2029, Starknet’s desire for independence is further bolstered.
Mini glossary: Quantum-resistant encryption refers to cryptographic methods designed to protect data against the vastly superior computational power of future quantum computers.
The voting process, which runs until October 22, currently sees a 99.88% approval for the “yes” option. However, this referendum is non-binding. It merely authorizes the technical research process, while a complete transition would necessitate further preparations and additional voting rounds.
No changes are planned for the project’s tokenomics for now. STRK will remain the sole native settlement asset of the network, and maintaining bridges with Ethereum remains a primary goal.
While community support appears robust, the current vote only greenlights the research phase, requiring new decision stages for technical transition.
Security Stakes Loom Large Over Independence
The most critical cost of this separation will emerge in the security domain. Currently, Starknet transactions benefit indirectly from Ethereum’s validator network and its multi-billion-dollar staking power. If the network becomes independent, it will need to establish its own security system.
Security will largely hinge on STRK’s market value, which stands at $580.24 million. Although modest compared to Ethereum, developers are prepared to balance this with technological flexibility and timeline advantages.
