Swiss regulator FINMA has approved a Bitcoin $BTC-only exchange-traded fund for public offering in Switzerland. BIT Asset Management's Bitcoin Fund ETF, trading under the ticker BBIT, will give retail investors direct Bitcoin exposure through a regulated fund. It is expected to begin trading on SIX Swiss Exchange in November.

What FINMA approved

FINMA approved the country's first spot Bitcoin exchange-traded fund for retail investors, allowing a fund to invest directly in the cryptocurrency under Swiss investment fund rules. The regulator announced the approval on October 20, 2026.FINMA did not name the fund manager, but BIT Asset Management, a wholly owned subsidiary of BIT, identified itself as the manager in its own announcement.

Switzerland already has Bitcoin products. The SIX Swiss Exchange has listed Bitcoin exchange-traded products (ETPs) for years, including a Bitcoin and ether product launched in 2019. The difference is structure. Swiss crypto ETPs are debt securities, while the new ETF operates under investment fund law.BBIT is a Swiss collective investment scheme, and the fund keeps its assets separate from those of the fund management company and ring-fenced for investors.

FINMA said the ETF falls into the category of "other funds for alternative investments" with a specific risk under Swiss law. It cited Bitcoin's longer trading history and much higher trading volumes than most other cryptocurrencies as the basis for an exception to diversification rules. The regulator also said other fund providers have submitted or announced applications for Bitcoin ETFs.

Risk warning and market context

The regulator paired the approval with a caution. It warned that the cryptocurrency's high price volatility could sharply reduce the value of an investment.FINMA also required firms selling the ETF to comply with Switzerland's Financial Services Act, including clear warnings about volatility, potential losses and suitability checks.

On access, retail and qualified investors will be able to buy shares in the fund through a standard brokerage account once it starts trading. The public offering is restricted to Switzerland.

The approval follows earlier steps by the regulator. In 2021, FINMA allowed funds for qualified investors that invest in multiple digital assets. This time, it opened a single-asset Bitcoin product to retail investors. The model is similar to the US, where BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) and ten other spot Bitcoin ETFs launched in January 2024.

The launch date is still subject to the manager's timetable. For now, BIT Asset Management says only that trading is expected in November.
