The numbers behind @dfinity's Internet Computer protocol paint a striking picture. The $ICP token carries a market capitalisation of roughly $1.15 billion, yet total value locked (TVL) on the chain sits at approximately $12.6 million, according to DeFiLlama. That gap produces a market cap-to-TVL ratio of around 91x.

How Does That Compare to Other Chains?

For most major blockchains, the ratio looks very different. Ethereum, for instance, currently holds around $45.4 billion in TVL, against a market cap in the hundreds of billions, keeping its ratio well under the double digits. Total DeFi TVL across all chains has fallen 37% in 2026 to roughly $71.77 billion, with Ethereum holding 53.1% of that figure. Competing networks such as Solana and BNB Chain account for meaningful additional shares. By those standards, a 91x ratio for ICP stands as a significant outlier.

In simple terms, the market is pricing $ICP at a substantial premium relative to the economic activity actually happening on the network. A lower ratio would suggest stronger capital deployment within the ecosystem, a sign that users and developers are actively locking funds into DeFi protocols on the chain.

What Is Driving ICP's Valuation?

ICP ranks roughly 59th by market cap at approximately $1.18 billion, placing it well below the largest smart contract platforms but above most emerging Layer-1s. The gap between its market cap and on-chain activity reflects a dynamic common to technically ambitious projects: the market is pricing in future potential rather than present usage.

In July 2026, the network processed 133 million daily transactions, ranking as the second-most-active blockchain globally. That activity has not yet translated into proportional DeFi capital inflows, however. ICP's activity is real but not dominant, suggesting the architecture's technical advantages have not yet translated into compelling value propositions at scale.

On the tokenomics side, the ongoing "Mission 70" initiative, approved in January 2026, aims to cut annual inflation from around 9.7% to between 2.9% and 5.4% by end-2026 by capping staking rewards and accelerating the burn of cycles. Whether that structural tightening can help close the gap between market cap and on-chain activity remains to be seen.

For now, the DeFiLlama data serves as a useful reality check: a billion-dollar market cap does not necessarily reflect a billion dollars' worth of economic activity on the ground.
