@Trondao is preparing to push through what it describes as its most significant protocol upgrade to date. The GreatVoyage-v4.8.2 (Pyrrho) release has already cleared the Nile Testnet and is heading toward a mainnet governance vote on August 25, when the network will weigh in on parameters #95 and #96 to formally activate the protocol.
What the Pyrrho Upgrade Changes
The headline improvement is a deep overhaul of the TRON Virtual Machine (TVM). The new version adds support for Ethereum Pectra and Osaka compatibility, introduces the CLZ instruction and secp256r1 signature verification precompile, migrates fastjson to Jackson, and unifies node monitoring metrics from InfluxDB to Prometheus. The secp256r1 addition enables compatibility with modern authentication mechanisms including Apple Secure Enclave, WebAuthn, and Android Keystore.
Notably, upgrading the node software itself does not automatically activate the new TVM semantics. The related changes are all controlled by on-chain governance parameters. That is where the August 25 vote comes in. Once Super Representatives approve the relevant proposals, the new execution capabilities go live across the network.
Further protocol optimizations include more secure recourse window calculations, enhanced calldata verification, improved TVM execution safeguards, and adjustable time restrictions for consistent contract calls. These changes are aimed at improving ecosystem security, long-term scalability, and execution reliability.
What Node Operators Need to Do
This upgrade further enhances TRON's capabilities in smart contract compatibility, interface handling, node monitoring, and operations management, and is classified as a mandatory upgrade. All node operators must update to v4.8.2 or v4.8.2.1 by August 25 to remain synced with the network as $TRX and stablecoin volume continues to move at pace.
TRON's Event Plugin has also been updated to version v3.0.0. Node operators using the official plugin are advised to update the Event Plugin first, then upgrade their main node software. Failure to upgrade risks losing synchronization with the rest of the network once the new parameters are activated.
