Uniswap Labs has unveiled a major update for its decentralized exchange protocol, introducing v4 as an aggregator that routes trades across multiple liquidity venues and drives protocol fee contributions towards UNI token burns.

Uniswap v4 integrates with external liquidity sources

On Thursday, Uniswap Labs announced the launch of Aggregator Hooks on the Uniswap Web App and Uniswap API, now active on the Ethereum mainnet, Base, and Robinhood Chain. With these hooks, Uniswap v4 operates as an aggregator, sourcing liquidity from seven external venues at the outset.

Uniswap Labs reported that these connected protocols represent over 90% of DEX trading activity across the integrated chains, although the company did not disclose their names. Each Aggregator Hook wraps an external source, making it accessible to trade routing software as if it were a Uniswap v4 pool.

With this structure, routing engines can price trades that combine internal Uniswap pools with external sources, using real-time block-by-block quotes. Uniswap specified that the entire route is executed in a single transaction, requiring no additional approvals from users.

Protocol fees to support UNI token burning

A key feature of the update is that swaps routed via external sources are now subject to protocol fees, thereby increasing the volume of UNI tokens burned. According to Uniswap Labs, this is because the Aggregator Hooks record external liquidity providers as v4 pools within the protocol.

Trades through external venues now pay protocol fees, contributing directly to UNI token burns, as these sources are registered as Uniswap v4 pools.

Uniswap Labs currently lists total swap volume on its platform at over $4.5 trillion. The firm stated that the new hooks are intended to attract and aggregate liquidity that has historically resided on other platforms, which could increase volume and deepen liquidity within Uniswap’s network.

The changes align with the UNIfication proposal first introduced in November 2025. This governance initiative sought to activate protocol fees across the platform and create mechanisms for those fees to be directed to UNI token burning. The proposal specifically included aggregator hooks as one of the products through which fees would be collected, alongside v4, UniswapX, and layer-2 expansions. It also proposed the burning of 100 million UNI from the project’s treasury.

Mini dictionary: Uniswap is one of the largest decentralized trading protocols, enabling peer-to-peer trading of cryptocurrencies without traditional intermediaries. Aggregator Hooks are a technical solution allowing Uniswap to source liquidity from external platforms and route trades through them as if they were native Uniswap pools. This approach aims to improve trading efficiency and bolster protocol revenue.

The initiative is part of Uniswap Labs’ broader strategy to consolidate DEX liquidity and bring greater value to UNI token holders through systematic token burning and enhanced network effects.
