Spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in the United States recorded $430.2 million in net outflows on November 5, erasing a short-lived period of net inflows and raising new questions about demand from institutional investors in the sector. This reversal comes as Hong Kong advances its digital asset regulations and expands its range of Bitcoin funds, but recent figures do not indicate that Hong Kong-based investment can offset ongoing outflows from the US market.

Sharp net outflows follow brief inflows

Farside Investors, a London-based investment analysis firm, reported that the $430.2 million in net ETF outflows on November 5 marked a sharp reversal from the $74.6 million in inflows registered just one day earlier. This fluctuation echoes previous tumultuous sessions: October 30 brought outflows of $643.2 million, with further redemptions of $398.6 million on November 2 and $115.6 million on November 3.

Fidelity’s FBTC ETF led the latest wave of US withdrawals, tallying $199.9 million in net outflows. BlackRock’s IBIT ETF followed with $105 million. Grayscale’s GBTC fund posted outflows of $49.9 million, while Franklin Templeton’s EZBC, VanEck’s HODL, and ARK’s ARKB also posted significant redemptions.

Across the first four trading days in November, US spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $869.8 million in net outflows, and over the most recent seven finalized sessions, total withdrawals swelled to approximately $1.36 billion.

These withdrawal figures reflect net flows through ETF products but do not provide insight into the motivations behind investor decisions or the specific profile of the investors involved.

Hong Kong builds its digital asset market

In contrast to recent US outflows, Hong Kong maintains a regulated digital asset market that already supports both spot and futures-based Bitcoin ETFs. The territory has four listed spot Bitcoin ETFs and two futures-based products. According to industry reports, the first three spot funds began trading on April 30, 2024. MicroBit’s Bitcoin and Gold Value ETF launched on August 26, 2026, offering both Bitcoin and gold exposure with pricing in Hong Kong and US dollars.

Hong Kong’s Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) continues to broaden oversight of the sector. In an official statement from November 4, the government confirmed authorization of 17 tokenized retail investment products as of September 2026, with collective assets of approximately HK$10.3 billion. A bill expanding the virtual asset regulatory framework to include advisory, managing, dealing, and custody services is planned before the end of the year.

Mini dictionary: The Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) is Hong Kong’s main financial markets regulator, responsible for overseeing securities and futures markets, enforcing compliance, and authorizing financial products, including tokenized funds and ETFs.

Despite the size of Hong Kong’s financial market, with private banking and wealth management assets reaching HK$12.9 trillion in 2025, available data does not indicate a proportionate shift of funds into Bitcoin or digital assets. Month-to-date, Hong Kong-based spot Bitcoin ETFs also reported net outflows: $5.71 million from ChinaAMC, $1.58 million from Bosera HashKey, and $68,880 from Harvest.

Market moves and investor sentiment

The market reaction accompanied a significant price correction in leading cryptocurrencies. By 10:13 UTC on November 6, CoinGecko reported Bitcoin trading at $76,080, down 5.27% over the previous 24 hours. Ethereum fell 7.41% to $2,236.94, and Solana dropped 6.88% to $90.04. However, these moves have not been directly linked to ETF withdrawals.

Sentiment also showed signs of caution, with the Crypto Fear & Greed Index falling to 28, reflecting a “Fear” reading. This index tracks market sentiment and signals increased wariness but does not predict specific asset prices.

Available figures suggest that recent ETF redemptions have not been absorbed by Hong Kong funds, which reported moderate outflows rather than offsetting inflows during the same period.

Regulatory outlook and future fund flows

Finalized daily US ETF readings in the coming sessions will clarify whether redemptions persist or stabilize. Sustained withdrawals combined with falling digital asset prices could raise concerns about short-term demand, but such a scenario cannot be assumed from the data alone.

In Hong Kong, the government aims to extend its virtual asset regulatory framework by year-end. The SFC has already approved two tokenized money-market funds to begin round-the-clock secondary trading on licensed virtual asset platforms. These developments highlight Hong Kong’s ambition to manage digital assets and tokenized products across a broader regulatory landscape, but are not direct signals of future Bitcoin ETF demand or price direction.

Fund flows remain only one piece of the market picture. Cryptocurrencies continue to show sharp and sometimes rapid shifts, as demonstrated by the recent movements in Bitcoin, Ether, and Solana.
