Ethereum (@ethereum) $ETH co-founder Vitalik Buterin (@VitalikButerin) has called for far more attention to airborne disease resistance, warning that the world is likely to face more airborne outbreaks in future.
In a post on X, Buterin argued that several trends are converging. He pointed to an extremely dense and interconnected society, including city and farm animals, along with accidents from bio research and offensive biotech, all enhanced by powerful AI. He also noted that offensive biotech could come from individuals as well as government programmes that are hard to regulate.
Buterin said the field has "unclaimed wins" using technology that already exists. He listed early detection, passive universal testing, filtration, ventilation, UVC and better open-source vaccines. He said the area gets far less attention than longevity research, which he described as still very important.
He also argued that pandemic resistance does not have to mean heavy intrusion into private life. He believes effective resistance can be achieved without excessive intrusion into personal lives, provided the necessary work is done. Open science and cryptography, he said, can help protect personal privacy while these systems are built.
A long-running funding focus
The comments build on years of philanthropic activity. Buterin supports open-source biosecurity, pandemic prevention and indoor air quality programmes through his funds Balvi and Kanro, which have distributed over $400 million worldwide, according to a company press release.
Specific grants include a $9.4 million gift to the University of Maryland to support research into germicidal ultraviolet light. The university said such systems could one day remove COVID-19, influenza and other contagious pathogens from the air faster than ventilation and filtration alone.A $300,000 grant also went to the UConn Indoor Air Quality Initiative.
On the technology side, Buterin has said he backs free and open-source hardware that can develop tools for preventing the next pandemic. That fits his wider case for defensive technologies that can be verified and used without central control.
The latest remarks add to a broader debate on how AI could change biosecurity risks, and on whether governments and researchers are directing enough funding to prevention measures that are already well understood.
